And heck, if you had tuned in a couple minutes prior, it probably was the song that just ended!<\/p>\n<p>Nothing demonstrates this more clearly than this video by Australian musical comedy act, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Axis_of_Awesome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Axis of Awesome<\/a>.&#8221; They literally take 4 chords and cycle through dozens of popular songs you know and love. Check it out:<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"4 Chords | Music Videos | The Axis Of Awesome\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oOlDewpCfZQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/center>Since the beginning of Hearandplay.com <em>(August, 2000)<\/em>, I&#8217;ve been preaching, <strong><em>&#8220;Songs follow recycled, reusable, repeating patterns. There is nothing new under the sun.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In fact, once you&#8217;ve learned enough of these patterns, the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pareto_principle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pareto Principle<\/a>&#8221; kicks in and you&#8217;ll pretty much find yourself playing the same things over and over.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as the &#8220;80\/20&#8221; Rule, and applied to music, the Pareto Principle tells us that 80% of songs will come from the same 20% of chords and chord progressions. I think this holds true, if not even more drastic (especially in today&#8217;s pop music where it just might be 90\/10). 4-chord songs exemplify this perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Songs follow recycled, reusable, repeating patterns.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not to say every song will sound the same.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I&#8217;ve shared this viral video featuring 47 &#8220;4-chord songs&#8221; following the SAME chord pattern, when you add in varying rhythms, melody lines, instruments, chord inversions\/voicings, and lyrics, you can create <em>&#8220;new-old&#8221;<\/em> masterpieces that fool your audience into thinking they are new creations. We, as Ear Musicians, know better.<\/p>\n<p>(And to be fair, some will argue that, despite this, they ARE new creations. I get it. My grandma&#8217;s sweet potato pie is, after all, my grandma&#8217;s sweet potato pie. Much of the same ingredients as the next person&#8217;s but with her magical touch applied).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;What are 4-chord songs made of,&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> you ask?<\/p>\n<h2>Introducing 4-Chord Songs<\/h2>\n<p>They are songs built off these degrees of the scale:<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; 5 &#8211; 6 &#8211; 4<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How did we get these numbers?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They are simply taken from the major scale of the key you&#8217;re in.<\/p>\n<p>Say you&#8217;re in C major&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This is the C major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs c major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>C D E F G A B C<\/p>\n<p>(I won&#8217;t take time in this post to cover the creation of major scales as I&#8217;ve written extensively about this in the past. But check out the beginning of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/piano-chords-complete-guide\">this post<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Now all you gotta do is number this scale.<\/p>\n<p>C is 1<br \/>\nD is 2<br \/>\nE is 3<br \/>\nF is 4<br \/>\nG is 5<br \/>\nA is 6<br \/>\nB is 7<\/p>\n<p>So when we talk about &#8220;4-chord songs,&#8221; we&#8217;re talking about songs based on these notes in the key of C.<\/p>\n<p>Some type of chord on C (the 1).<\/p>\n<p>Some type of chord on G (the 5).<\/p>\n<p>Some type of chord on A (the 6).<\/p>\n<p>Some type of chord on F (the 4).<\/p>\n<p>These 4 chords make the world of pop music go round n round&#8230; trust me.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;What do you play on these tones?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> you ask.<\/p>\n<h2>4-Chord Songs: Chord Names<\/h2>\n<p>Similar to my major scales post, I have a more extensive article that explains what we call &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/how-to-figure-out-the-natural-chords-of-every-key\">diatonic chords<\/a>&#8221; (the naturally occurring chords on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/heres-a-foolproof-guide-thatll-have-you-naming-chords-correctly-tonight\">each tone<\/a> of the scale). And here&#8217;s a 44-pg &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/piano-chords-complete-guide\">Complete Guide to Chords<\/a>.&#8221; For now, I&#8217;ll just tell you.<\/p>\n<p>C major (the 1):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,E,G,&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs c major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>G major (the 5):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,B,D&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs G major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A minor (the 6):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,C,E&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs a minor\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>F major (the 4):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=F,A,C&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs f major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;So then why don&#8217;t my chords sound like the songs in the video above?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> you ask.<\/p>\n<p>Because you have 12 planets in music.<\/p>\n<p>To play this progression on planet earth (let&#8217;s say the key of &#8220;C major&#8221;) won&#8217;t sound the same as playing it on Jupiter (let&#8217;s say &#8220;F major&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>The chords in the video happen to be in the key of D major (&#8220;pluto?&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve got to do what it takes to &#8220;translate&#8221; what is being played in C major to the new key of D major.<\/p>\n<p>If earth uses oxygen but pluto uses some other element, well, you had better figure it out.<\/p>\n<p>D major has its own scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,E,Fs,G,A,B,Cs,D&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs D major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Which means, it has its own number system:<\/p>\n<p>D is 1<br \/>\nE is 2<br \/>\nF# is 3<br \/>\nG is 4<br \/>\nA is 5<br \/>\nB is 6<br \/>\nC# is 7<\/p>\n<p>Which means, its &#8220;4-chord songs&#8221; are going to use these keynotes:<\/p>\n<p>Some type of chord on D (the 1).<\/p>\n<p>Some type of chord on A (the 5).<\/p>\n<p>Some type of chord on B (the 6).<\/p>\n<p>Some type of chord on G (the 4).<\/p>\n<p>And those chords look like this:<\/p>\n<p>D major (the 1):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,Fs,A,&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs D major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A major (the 5):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,Cs,E&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs a major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>B minor (the 6):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,D,Fs&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs b minor\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>G major (the 4):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,B,D&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs g major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Add in your left hand, and it looks like this:<\/p>\n<p>D major (the 1):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,D,Fs,A,&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs D major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A major (the 5):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,A,Cs,E&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs a major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>B minor (the 6):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,B,D,Fs&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs b minor\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>G major (the 4):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,G,B,D&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs g major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s now your job to learn this pattern in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/how-to-transpose-stuff\">all 12 keys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve given you the first 2. You do the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Then, when it comes to figuring out these simple &#8220;4-chord songs,&#8221; first find the key of the song (aka &#8211; the &#8220;planet&#8221;) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/findingkey.html\">using these free ear-training techniques I share<\/a>, apply the chords of that key, and &#8220;boom,&#8221; you&#8217;ll be very close.<\/p>\n<p>I say &#8220;very close&#8221; because you then might have to rearrange the notes of the chord (aka &#8211; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/how-to-play-smoothly-using-the-power-of-inversions\">invert<\/a>&#8220;) to make them sound exactly like the song.<\/p>\n<p>For example, it may not be this C major chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,E,G,&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs c major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;it may be this one:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=E,G,C&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs c major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;or this one:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,C,E&amp;color=99FFFF&amp;size=2\" alt=\"4-chord songs c major\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But fret not! We haven&#8217;t added or taken away any notes. We just rearranged them. Whatever was on the bottom goes to the top. It&#8217;s that simple. Cycle through them til&#8217; you&#8217;ve found the chord that sounds the &#8220;most&#8221; correct.
