{"id":10400,"date":"2015-11-17T09:00:41","date_gmt":"2015-11-17T17:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/?p=10400"},"modified":"2024-10-21T07:51:57","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T15:51:57","slug":"suspended-chords-how-to-play-and-recognize-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hearplaymain.wpenginepowered.com\/suspended-chords-how-to-play-and-recognize-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Suspended Chords &#8211; How To Play and Recognize Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Suspended chords result when the third of a chord is replaced by the perfect fourth, or less commonly, the major second. <\/p>\n<p>The lack of a minor or a major third in the chord creates an open sound, while the dissonance between the fourth and fifth or second and root creates tension that needs to be resolved (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suspended_chord\">source<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>(Don&#8217;t worry, by the way, if you don&#8217;t understand the last paragraph. I&#8217;ll break it down clearly and simply below).<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nYou don&#8217;t have to be a musician for your ears to know &#8220;another&#8221; chord needs to follow. That&#8217;s how effective suspended chords are in creating tension. And just like life (<em>working out\/exercising, feature film plots, laws of nature, etc<\/em>), when tension is applied, it must be followed by <em>release<\/em> at some point.<\/p>\n<p>Curling a dumbbell (tension) is followed by rest (release). A really tense part of a movie (where the good guy is trapped) is eventually followed by some type of resolution (whether good or bad but our curiosity is put to rest for the time being). In nature and the laws of motion, what goes up, must eventually come down.<\/p>\n<p>Same with music.<\/p>\n<p>A tense chord seeks resolution. Our ears long for it.<\/p>\n<h2>Suspended Chords &#8211; How to form them<\/h2>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have a good understanding of chords, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/piano-chords-complete-guide\">see my free chord guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Consider this C major chord:<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,E,G,&#038;color=FFCC00&#038;size=2' alt='C major chord C E G' border=0 \/><br \/>\nC E G<\/p>\n<p>Here are the degrees of this chord (again, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/piano-chords-complete-guide\">see my chord guide<\/a> if this isn&#8217;t making any sense).<\/p>\n<p>C = 1st degree<br \/>\nE = 3rd degree<br \/>\nG = 5th degree<\/p>\n<p>(These degrees come from the major scale).<\/p>\n<p>C major scale:<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&#038;color=FFCC00&#038;size=2' border=0 alt='C major scale C D E F G A B C' \/><br \/>\nC D E F G A B C<\/p>\n<p><strong>C is 1<\/strong><br \/>\nD is 2<br \/>\n<strong>E is 3<\/strong><br \/>\nF is 4<br \/>\n<strong>G is 5<\/strong><br \/>\nA is 6<br \/>\nB is 7<\/p>\n<p>Suspended chords result from simply taking the third degree out:<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,G,&#038;color=FFCC00&#038;size=2' alt='suspended chords breakdown c g' border=0 \/><br \/>\nC G<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and replacing with the fourth degree of the scale:<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,F,G,&#038;color=FFCC00&#038;size=2' 'C suspended 4 chord C F G' border=0 \/><br \/>\nC F G<\/p>\n<p>This gives us what we call a <strong>&#8220;C sus4&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;C suspended 4&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The number 4 refers to the degree that replaced the third.<\/p>\n<p>Can you guess, then, what a <em>&#8220;C sus2&#8221;<\/em> might look like?<\/p>\n<p>One thing is for sure: There will be no third degree. We removed the &#8220;D&#8221; and replaced it with &#8220;Eb,&#8221; the 4th.<\/p>\n<p>F sus2<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=F,G,C&#038;color=FFCC00&#038;size=2' alt='F sus2 F G C' border=0 \/><br \/>\nF G C<br \/>\n*Normal F major chord is F A C. We removed the &#8220;A&#8221; and replaced it with &#8220;G,&#8221; the 2nd.<\/p>\n<p>**Interestingly, this F sus2 chord has the same notes as C sus4.
