That means that approximately 29% of scale degree seventh chords are <strong>major seventh chords.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though the major seventh chord is considered to be dissonant in classical music, it is the toast of several popular music styles like jazz, r&amp;b, and funk to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be covering as much as we can on the major seventh chord, ranging from its definition to its intervallic breakdown and formation.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, welcome to week seven. There&#8217;s so much to cover so don\u2019t be in a haste to zone off from this post.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;What is a Major Seventh Chord?&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>A major seventh chord is basically a seventh chord.<\/p>\n<p>Seventh chords are note combinations (aka &#8211; &#8220;chords&#8221;) that encompass seven diatonic degrees.<\/p>\n<p>In music theory, chords can be created by stacking notes together. The relationship between these notes that are stacked together can be based on intervals of seconds (aka &#8211; &#8220;secundal harmony&#8221;):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;thirds (aka &#8211; &#8220;tertian harmony&#8221;):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and even fourths (aka &#8211; &#8220;quartal harmony&#8221;):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,F,Bb,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nHeck, there are even chords that are stacked together in fifths (aka &#8211; &#8220;quintal chords&#8221;) and I hope to cover quintal chords in subsequent posts.<\/p>\n<p>Our use of\u00a0 the term <em>major seventh chord<\/em> in this post refers to any chord built off the major scale, whose size encompasses seven scale degrees with <strong>third intervals<\/strong> between chord tones (aka &#8211; &#8220;tertian harmony&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>If this doesn&#8217;t make any sense right now, don&#8217;t worry. I&#8217;ll break it down, step-by-step, in this lesson.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from the first degree of the C major scale (C):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;if we stack a third (E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and another third (G):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and yet another third (B):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,B,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;this would produce the C major seventh chord.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that all these thirds are not the same in quality.<\/p>\n<p>C to E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a major third.<\/p>\n<p>E to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,G,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a minor third<\/p>\n<p>G to B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,B,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a major third.<\/p>\n<p>In tertian harmony, we are not particular about the quality of third used, whether major or minor.<\/p>\n<p>To take you to the next level in your understanding of the major seventh chord, let&#8217;s break it down to see the intervals it is made up of.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;What Stuff Are Major Seventh Chords Made Up Of?&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>If we breakdown the C major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,B,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;into intervals, here are the three intervals in relation to C, the root:<\/p>\n<p>C to E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>major third<\/strong> interval.<\/p>\n<p>C to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,G,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>perfect fifth<\/strong> interval.<\/p>\n<p>C to B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,B,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>major seventh<\/strong> interval.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at the properties of these intervals&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>The Major Third Interval<\/h3>\n<p>The major third is the <em>relationship in pitch<\/em> between the <strong>first and third<\/strong> tones of the major scale. Using the C major scale, the major third interval is formed by the relationship between C and E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThis quality of interval on the third chord tone determines the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/two-tonalities\">tonality<\/a> of a chord, whether it is major or minor. This is the interval that makes the major seventh chord a major chord quality.<\/p>\n<h3>The Perfect Fifth Interval<\/h3>\n<p>The perfect fifth is the <em>relationship in pitch<\/em> between the <strong>first and fifth<\/strong> tones of the major scale.<\/p>\n<p>Using the C major scale, the perfect fifth interval is formed by the relationship between C and G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,G,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThis quality of interval on the fifth chord tone determines the <em>stability<\/em> of the chord. The major seventh derives its stability from the perfect fifth interval, which is said to be <em>universally consonant.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The Major Seventh Interval<\/h3>\n<p>The major seventh is the <em>relationship in pitch<\/em> between the <strong>first and seventh<\/strong> tones of the major scale. Using the C major scale, the major seventh interval is formed by the relationship between C and B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,B,&amp;color=CC9900&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nAlthough intervals of a seventh are considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/forming-seventh-chords-dissonant-intervals\">dissonant<\/a> in traditional European art music (aka &#8211; &#8220;classical music&#8221;), the major seventh chord is incredibly popular in jazz, r&amp;b, and other popular music styles.<\/p>\n<p>[thrive_leads id=&#8217;12310&#8242;]<\/p>\n<h2>Alternative Chord Formation Techniques<\/h2>\n<p>There are various approaches to chord formation. In previous weeks, we&#8217;ve approached chord formation using scales, intervals, and even chords.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these approaches, we&#8217;ll be using mutual intervals also in the formation of the major seventh chord. Of course, you must know your D major scale (D E F# G A B C# D). Endeavor to familiarize yourself with the major scales if you must approach the formation of the major seventh chord from the major scale.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s move on to the next chord formation approach for the major seventh chord.<\/p>\n<h3><b><em>Interval Approach<\/em> to the Chord Formation of the Major Seventh Chord<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Earlier in this post, we broke down the seventh chord into smaller bits known as intervals. Here are three of them&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Major third<br \/>\nPerfect fifth<br \/>\nMajor seventh<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These intervals can be stacked into one octave to produce the major seventh chord. If you call this an advanced interval approach, so be it.<\/p>\n<p>The major seventh chord can be broken down into two perfect fifth intervals. For example, the C major seventh chord can be broken into two perfect fifth intervals.
