{"id":11593,"date":"2016-05-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-25T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/?p=11593"},"modified":"2024-10-07T18:08:19","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T02:08:19","slug":"getting-started-with-the-piano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hearplaymain.wpenginepowered.com\/getting-started-with-the-piano\/","title":{"rendered":"First Step To Take While Getting Started With The Piano"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that you&#8217;re getting started with the piano, welcome to your first lesson.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be taking you by the hand in this lesson and showing you step-by-step, from some basic terms you need to be familiar with, to all you need to know to be able to distinguish one note from the other.<\/p>\n<p>Your first piano lesson is going to be loaded with important secrets, tools and tips, but, I\u2019ve also done my best to present it in a simple style that anyone can learn from.<\/p>\n<p>Without further ado, let\u2019s jump at it.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Preliminaries <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The image below is a keyboard.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I really want to believe that this is not your first time of seeing the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>The keyboard is a cross section of black and white finger keys arranged from left to right (horizontally).<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things that are note-worthy:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Color.<\/strong> There are white and black notes on the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design.<\/strong> The black notes are shorter than white notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pattern.<\/strong> Black notes are grouped in twos and threes.<\/p>\n<p>I call them the <em>physical properties <\/em>of the keyboard because right before you learn about notes, scales, intervals, chords, and progressions, it is important that you have a knowledge of these properties.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;Can I Burst Your Bubble?&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Do you know that same way you can look at the computer keyboard and see alphabets, numbers, and symbols, you can look at the piano keyboard and also see alphabets, numbers and symbols.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Alphabets<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There are several finger keys on the piano.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This entire collection of notes may seem overwhelming. But can be broken down into sets of <b>seven<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>One 7-note set:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two 7-note set:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Three 7-note set:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Four 7-note set:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This collection of notes (seven of them) can be named using seven alphabets.<\/p>\n<p>A, B, C, D, E, F, and G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For some reasons I don\u2019t wish to disclose yet, this 7-note set usually starts with a C note. But it\u2019s still okay because in the long run we\u2019ll still have seven alphabets represented.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty much, we\u2019re starting on C, when the seventh alphabet is reached, we\u2019ll get back to A, B, and then C.<\/p>\n<p>C, D, E, F, G, A, and B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,D,E,F,G,A,B,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As opposed to the computer keyboard where you have to struggle with 26 alphabets, it\u2019s easier with the piano keyboard because you have JUST seven alphabets.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Numbers<\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Yes! There are numbers on the piano too.<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s appropriate to tell you the reason why the 7-note sets are arranged from C to B instead of A-G.<\/p>\n<p>In the use of numbers, C is considered as the <b>number one<\/b> even though A is the first letter of the alphabets.<\/p>\n<p>C is number 1:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>D is number 2:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>E is number 3:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=E,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>F is number 4:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=F,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>G is number 5:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A is number 6:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and B is number 7:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nI\u2019m excited to share this with you because pretty soon, you\u2019ll find yourself among musicians and will hear them use certain numeric codes like \u201ctwo five one,\u201d \u201cseven three six\u201d etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is two five one?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Two five one has to do with D, G and C.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did I get D, G and C?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>D is number 2<\/i>, <i>G is number 5<\/i> and <i>C is number 1<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve covered alphabets and numbers, let\u2019s look at symbols.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Symbols<\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In addition to alphabets and numbers, we have symbols on the piano.<\/p>\n<p>There are fewer symbols in to look out for on the piano:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u266d<\/li>\n<li>\u266f<\/li>\n<li>\u266e<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026as opposed to the computer keyboard where you have several symbols such as !, @, #, $, %, ^, &amp;, * etc.<\/p>\n<p>Same way symbols have their respective names,<\/p>\n<p><strong>#<\/strong> is known as \u201chash\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>&amp;<\/strong> is pronounced as \u201cand\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026these symbols also have their respective names:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u266d<\/strong> is pronounced \u201cflat\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u266f<\/strong> is pronounced \u201csharp\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u266e<\/strong> is pronounced \u201cnatural\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These symbols have their individual roles as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Sharp: Raises a note by a <b>semitone<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Flat: Lowers a note by a <b>semitone<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Natural: Neutralizes the effect of sharps and flats.<\/p>\n<p><b>Take note\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In music, there are two directions. Movement to the right is considered as ascending while movement to the left is considered as descending.<\/p>\n<p>Raising a note is associated with a movement to the right while lowering a note is associated with a movement to the left.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I\u2019ll want you to see a semitone the distance between two adjacent finger keys whether white or black.<\/p>\n<p>The distance between the following adjacent notes:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,Cs,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,Ds,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Fs,G,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Ab,A,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2026is semitone.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the sharp symbol will move a note to its adjacent note in the right direction while the flat symbol will move a note to its adjacent note in the left direction.<\/p>\n<p><b>It take a sharp to raise\u2026 <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Using the sharp symbol,<\/p>\n<p>C:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2026can be raised to:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Cs&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2026which is an adjacent note in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p><b>It take a flat to lower\u2026 <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Using the flat symbol,<\/p>\n<p>C:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2026can be lowered to:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Cb,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2026which is an adjacent note in the left direction.<\/p>\n<p>Black notes derive their names basically from the relationship between alphabets and symbols. For example, C# (pronounced as C sharp):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Cs&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2026can be derived from C:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2026by raising it by a semitone.<\/p>\n<p>My time is probably up. But before you leave this page, let me introduce you to note identification.<i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<h2>Keyboard Navigation<\/h2>\n<p>As a beginner, If you follow the basic guide I&#8217;ll give you in this post, you&#8217;ll be able to find notes on the piano with the greatest ease.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get started!<\/p>\n<h3>Finding C and E<\/h3>\n<p>Cs and Es are related when it comes to keyboard navigation. This is because they are on the left and right hand side of the set of two black notes on the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>C<\/i><\/b> is the white note that is located on the<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> left hand side<\/span><\/strong> of the group of two black notes. Here are all the Cs on the piano:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,C,C,C&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;immediately before every set of two black notes<\/p>\n<p><b><i>E<\/i><\/b> is located on the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">right hand side<\/span><\/strong> of the group of two black notes. It&#8217;s usually captioned <em>&#8220;Fill in the blank spaces.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Alright, let&#8217;s fill in the blank spaces.<\/p>\n<p>In-between C and E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=FF99CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a letter of the alphabet.
