Seventh chords are important in music the same way triads are<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In this post, I\u2019ll be showing you an interval that is the secret link between 60% of the seventh chord qualities that are commonly used.<\/p>\n

Review Of Seventh Chords<\/h2>\n

An interval<\/a> is the relationship between two notes in terms of the distance between them.
\nEven though intervals can be used beyond the mere description of the distance between notes<\/a>, we\u2019re focusing on distances in this post.<\/p>\n

Definition of Seventh Chords<\/h3>\n

Seventh chords span an interval (or distance) of seven scale degrees or a “seventh.” Thus, why they are called seventh chords.<\/em><\/p>\n

Formation of Seventh Chords<\/h3>\n

Scales produce [intervals and] chords. Different scales produce different seventh chords and we\u2019ve covered these processes in our FREE 16-week chord revival program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Using the C major scale:
\n
\n\u2026we can form a seventh chord by stacking notes in thirds (aka \u2013 \u201ctertian harmony<\/a>\u201d) until a seventh is encompassed. <\/p>\n

Starting from C:
\n
\n\u2026stacking a third on C would add E:
\n
\n\u2026the third tone in the C major scale.<\/p>\n

Stacking a third on E would add G:
\n
\n\u2026the fifth tone in the C major scale.<\/p>\n

Stacking a third on G would add B:
\n
\n\u2026the seventh tone in the C major scale.<\/p>\n

We can stop stacking thirds here because we\u2019ve encompassed seven degrees of the C major scale from C to B:

Qualities of Seventh Chords<\/h3>\n

There are various qualities of seventh chords.<\/p>\n

The quality of a seventh chord depends on the scale it\u2019s derived from and the intervals that make it up (aka \u2013 \u201cintervallic components\u201d).<\/p>\n

Even though there are several qualities of seventh chords, there are five common ones I’d like to spotlight here:<\/p>\n
