The techniques that guide the movement of voices is known as <strong>voice-leading<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Time will fail me to talk about the underlying principles of voice-leading because I have a whole lot to share with you. However, I&#8217;ll be introducing you to the A and B voicing technique that can help you connect seventh chords with the a greater degree of smoothness.<\/p>\n<p>But before then, let&#8217;s quickly look at voicing.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;What Is Voicing?&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Voicing is the rearrangement of the notes of a chord. In this rearrangement, the notes are considered to be voice parts &#8211; soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.<\/p>\n<p>The tones of the C major seventh chord can be considered as voice parts. Here&#8217;s what I mean&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the bass voice part.<\/p>\n<p>E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the tenor voice part.<\/p>\n<p>G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the alto voice part.<\/p>\n<p>B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the soprano voice part.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t do so much of singing, but I know that in vocal classification, the bass and tenor voices are classified as the <em>lower voice parts<\/em> while the soprano and alto voices are classified as <em>higher voice parts<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We can split the C major seventh chord into lower and higher voice parts.<\/p>\n<p>Lower voice parts (C and E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which are the bass and tenor voice parts respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Higher voice parts (G and B):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,B,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which are the alto and soprano voice parts respectively.<\/p>\n<p>This voicing concept applies to any other major seventh chord on the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>In the F major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,A,C,E&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nF and A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,A,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are the lower voice parts &#8211; the bass and tenor voice parts respectively.<\/p>\n<p>C and E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,C,E&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are the higher voice parts &#8211; the alto and soprano voice parts respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you&#8217;re familiar with the <em>consideration of the notes of a chord as voices (aka &#8211; &#8220;voicing&#8221;)<\/em>, let&#8217;s look at A &amp; B Voicing Techniques.<\/p>\n<h2>A &amp; B Voicing Technique For Major Seventh Chords<\/h2>\n<p>The lower voice parts of a seventh chord are supposed to come before the higher voice parts. In the case of the C major seventh chord:<\/p>\n<p>C and E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are the lower voice parts while G and B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,B,&amp;color=00CCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are the upper voice parts.<\/p>\n<p>This regular way of having the lower voices come before the upper voices is called the A voicing.
