Before the concept of key came to be, an ancient system that used modes was used.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A mode [that is not transposed] consists of a collection of white notes (aka &#8211; &#8220;naturals&#8221;) from a given white note to its octave.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The concept of modes used every white note (aka &#8211; &#8220;natural&#8221;) on the piano to form a scale. There are seven modes, considering that there are seven natural notes on the piano (A to G):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and each natural note produced its unique mode when played to its octave. Here&#8217;s how to form modes from each natural note&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>From C to C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the <strong>ionian mode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From D to D:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the <strong>dorian mode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From E to E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the <strong>phrygian mode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From F to F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the <strong>lydian mode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From G to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the <strong>mixolydian mode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From A to A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the <strong>aeolian mode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From B to B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the <strong>locrian mode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In middle ages (AD 400 &#8211; 1400), music was composed using these modes. Just the same way we can have compositions in D minor today, then, it wasn&#8217;t so. You&#8217;ll rather see a piece of music written in the dorian mode.<\/p>\n<p>Although modes have been replaced by the concept of tonality, a knowledge of modes can help you appreciate the concept of tonality, and most important, there&#8217;s a way to relate tonalities with modes.<\/p>\n<h2>The Concept Of Key<\/h2>\n<p>Modes eventually evolved into key centers and two modes stood out from the rest as the major and minor scales, consequently, the major and minor key centers.<\/p>\n<p>The concept of the key center is the establishment of a given note on the keyboard as a central tone (aka &#8211; &#8220;tonic&#8221;.) This creates a <em>tonal environment<\/em>, where the tonic is the the center of attraction. The scholarly word for this tonal environment is called tonality.<\/p>\n<p>When a note is established as a key center, the outcome is one out of these two distinct tonalities &#8211; the <strong>major key<\/strong> and the <strong>minor key<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The two tonalities have different <em>feelings<\/em>. While the major tonality captures emotional feelings like brightness, happiness, etc., the minor tonality rather depicts the fearful, ghostly, dark, and other feelings that contrast that of the major key.<\/p>\n<p>The aeolian mode:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;formed from A to A, has the same notes with the A natural minor scale &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/these-are-traditional-scales-learn-how-to-play-them\">traditional scale<\/a> of the minor key. Check out the natural minor scale in all 12 keys&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>C minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>C# minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Cs,Ds,E,Fs,Gs,A,B,Cs&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nD minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,E,F,G,A,Bb,C,D&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nEb minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,F,Gb,Ab,Bb,Cb,Db,Eb&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nE minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,Fs,G,A,B,C,D,E&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nF minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,Db,Eb,F&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nF# minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Fs,Gs,A,B,Cs,D,E,Fs&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nG minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,A,Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nG# minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Gs,As,B,Cs,Ds,E,Fs,Gs&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nA minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nBb minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Bb,C,Db,Eb,F,Gb,Ab,Bb&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nB minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,Cs,D,E,Fs,G,A,B&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Here&#8217;s The Minor Key<\/h2>\n<p>The minor key is the key center made up of a step-wise arrangement of notes in whole steps, with half step between the 2nd &amp; 3rd degrees, and the 5th &amp; 6th degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, the easiest minor key you can relate with on the keyboard is the key of A minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and this is because it has exactly the same notes of the A aeolian mode:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nHowever, I want you to pay attention to the distance between adjacent notes, which is basically in whole steps, save for the 2nd and 3rd degrees:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,C,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and the 5th &amp; 6th degrees:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,F,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;where adjacent tones are a half step apart.<\/p>\n<p>To take you further in today&#8217;s study, let&#8217;s consider some vital properties of the minor key.<\/p>\n<h3>Avoid Note<\/h3>\n<p>The sixth tone of the minor key is usually considered to be an avoid note. In the A minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the sixth tone (which is F):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is usually considered an avoid note. The A melodic minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,Fs,Gs,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;does not have the avoid note because it has F#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Fs,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;as its sixth tone.<\/p>\n<p>If we substitute the sixth tone of the A natural minor scale (F):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;with the sixth tone of the A melodic minor scale (F#):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Fs,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the outcome is the A dorian scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,Fs,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;another minor scale without an avoid note.<\/p>\n<p>Further reading: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/avoid-note\">Avoiding the avoid note<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Natural Minor Scale<\/h3>\n<p>If the notes in the minor key are played in ascending and descending order, it forms the natural minor scale. If the notes in the key of A natural minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are played from A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;to A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/note-relationships-melody-harmony\">melodic fashion<\/a>, the outcome would be the A natural minor scale, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/these-are-traditional-scales-learn-how-to-play-them\">traditional scale<\/a> of the minor key.<\/p>\n<h3>Simple Intervals<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>An interval is the relationship between two notes [in terms of the distance between them].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Intervals can be formed between any two notes of the natural minor scale. However, in this segment, we are concerned with intervals that are formed between the first note of the natural minor scale [aka &#8211; &#8220;tonic&#8221;] and other scale tones.<\/p>\n<p>Simple intervals are intervals within the compass of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/4-dimensions-of-octave\">octave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The tonic of the A natural minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nTherefore, we can form the following simple intervals between the tonic and other tones in the key. Check them out&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A and A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>perfect unison<\/strong>, formed between the tonic and the first tone of the natural minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>A and B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>major second<\/strong>, formed between the tonic and the <em>second<\/em> tone of the natural minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>A and C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,C,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>minor third<\/strong>, formed between the tonic and the <em>third<\/em> tone of the natural minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>A and D:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,D,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>perfect fourth<\/strong>, formed between the tonic and the <em>fourth<\/em> tone of the natural minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>A and E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,E,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>perfect fifth<\/strong>, formed between the tonic and the <em>fifth<\/em> tone of the natural minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>A and F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,F,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>minor sixth<\/strong>, formed between the tonic and the <em>sixth<\/em> tone of the\u00a0natural minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>A and G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,G,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>minor seventh<\/strong>, formed between the tonic and the <em>seventh<\/em> tone of the\u00a0natural minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>A and A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>perfect octave<\/strong>, formed between the tonic and the <em>eighth<\/em> tone of the scale.<\/p>\n<p>Perfect intervals are formed between the tonic and the first, fourth, fifth, and eighth degrees of the natural minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>A major interval is formed between the tonic and the second tone of the natural minor scale, while minor intervals are formed between the tonic and the third, sixth, and seventh degrees of the natural minor scale respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from perfect intervals (that represent stability), minor intervals dominate the minor key. If you do the math, 37.5% of simple intervals are minor intervals.<\/p>\n<h3>The Tonic Chord<\/h3>\n<p>According to Jermaine Griggs, <em>&#8220;A chord is a collection of three or more related notes.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If a chord is formed on the first tone of the key, such a chord is called the tonic chord. In the key of A minor, we can play this collection of notes:<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;that are related in thirds (aka &#8211; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/tertian-chords-and-the-secret-relationship-between-almost-every-chord\">tertian harmony<\/a>&#8220;) as the tonic chord because the root of the chord is A:<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;which for all intents and purposes is the tonic of the A minor scale.<\/p>\n<p>Further reading: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/the-tonic-chord\">The Tonic Chord<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Primary Chords<\/h3>\n<p>There are four common triad qualities &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/major-triad-chord-cheat-sheet\">major<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/minor-triad-chord\">minor<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/diminished-triad\">diminished<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/augmented-triad\">augmented<\/a> triads, known to HearandPlay students [like me] as the fantastic four.<\/p>\n<p>Although the minor key has three out of the fantastic four triad qualities &#8211; the major, minor, and diminished triads, triads that have the same quality with the minor key are called the primary chords.<\/p>\n<p>If you evaluate the quality of all the scale degree triads in any given minor key, you&#8217;ll discover that only triads of the first, fourth, fifth degrees have the minor quality. Therefore, triads of the first, fourth, and fifth degrees of the minor key are primary chords in the key.<\/p>\n<p>In the key of A minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the primary triads are the A minor triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,C,E,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;of the first degree, the D minor triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,F,A,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;of the fourth degree, and the E minor triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,G,B,&amp;color=CC9966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;of the fifth
