Chords that are built of third intervals are said to have tertian harmony.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the importance of third intervals in chord formation, it is important for every serious musician to be familiar with all qualities of third intervals, and that&#8217;s our goal in this lesson. But before we go into all of that, let&#8217;s take a look at intervals.<\/p>\n<h2>A Short Note On Third Intervals<\/h2>\n<p>An interval can be defined as the relationship between two notes in terms of the distance between them.<\/p>\n<p>The above definition has all the vital keywords that can paint a picture of what an interval is..<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Relationship<\/li>\n<li>Two notes<\/li>\n<li>Distance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;however, it is important for us to highlight them.<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;The Relationship&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>An interval is the relationship between notes. In a previous lesson on note relationships, we covered two relationships &#8211; melody and harmony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melody<\/strong> is the relationship between notes that are heard separately while <strong>harmony<\/strong> is the relationship between notes that are heard at the same time. The two types of note relationship (melody and harmony) influences the two kinds of intervals &#8211; melodic and harmonic intervals.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>melodic interval<\/strong> is an interval where the notes are heard separately, while a harmonic interval is an interval where the notes are heard separately while a <strong>harmonic interval<\/strong> is an interval where the notes are heard at the same time.<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;Two Notes&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>On of the properties of an interval is that it is has two notes. The relationship between three or more notes are considered as chords. The following:<\/p>\n<p>C and B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,B,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nA and Db:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,Db,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are intervals, while the following:<\/p>\n<p>C, E, and G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nF, Ab, and Cb:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,Ab,Cb,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are not.<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;Distance&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Intervals can also be used to describe the distance in pitch between notes. The distance between C and A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,A,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a sixth because the interval C-A encompasses six degrees of the C major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;from C to A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,A,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;What Are Third Intervals?&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>A third interval is any interval that encompasses three letter names.<\/p>\n<p>In the C major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;C-E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a third interval because it encompasses C, D, and E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;three letter names. The major third interval encompasses a distance of three scale steps in the major scale. The intervals below&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>D# and F<\/li>\n<li>D and F<\/li>\n<li>D and F#<\/li>\n<li>Db and F#<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;are all third intervals because they encompass three letter names from D to F, however, playing them on the piano shows their difference in size.<\/p>\n<p>D# and F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Ds,F,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a diminished third.<\/p>\n<p>D and F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,F,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a minor third.<\/p>\n<p>D and F#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,Fs,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a major third.<\/p>\n<p>Db and F#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Db,Fs,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is an augmented third.<\/p>\n<h2>Consonant vs Dissonant Thirds<\/h2>\n<p>There are basically two classes of third intervals &#8211; consonant and dissonant thirds.<\/p>\n<p>The term &#8216;consonant&#8217; is used to describe a collection of two or more notes that sound pleasant and agreeable when played together, while the term &#8216;dissonant&#8217; is used to describe a collection of notes that are unpleasant and harsh.<\/p>\n<p>Major and minor third intervals are classified as <strong>consonant intervals<\/strong> while augmented and diminished intervals are classified as <strong>dissonant intervals<\/strong>.
