In the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=999966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C is the first (aka &#8211; &#8220;tonic&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>D is the second (aka &#8211; &#8220;supertonic&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>E is the third (aka &#8211; &#8220;mediant&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>F is the fourth (aka &#8211; &#8220;subdominant&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>G is the fifth (aka &#8211; &#8220;dominant&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>A is the sixth (aka &#8211; &#8220;submediant&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><strong>B is the seventh (aka &#8211; &#8220;subtonic&#8221;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C is the eighth (aka &#8211; &#8220;octave&#8221;)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The diminished triad is the chord of the seventh degree. The intervals that make up a chord are known as its intervallic components.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Let&#8217;s Go Ahead And Breakdown The Diminished Triad Into Its Intervallic Components&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The B diminished triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,D,F&amp;color=999966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;has the following intervallic components:<\/p>\n<p>B-D:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,D&amp;color=999966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>minor third<\/strong> interval.<\/p>\n<p>B-F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,F&amp;color=999966&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;a <strong>diminished fifth<\/strong> interval.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s focus on the latter &#8211; the diminished fifth interval. In a previous lesson we learned that the diminished fifth interval is an unstable interval that tends towards stable intervals when played.<\/p>\n<p>Did I mention that the diminished fifth interval is the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/main\/devil-music-tritones-vs-augmented-4ths-diminished-5ths\">tritone<\/a> that was called the <em>devil in music <\/em>in a generation where most trained musicians were church men.<\/p>\n<p>The diminished triad has the diminished fifth interval as its intervallic component. Although there are several known ways to apply diminished triads, we&#8217;re focusing on two:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diminished triads as passing chords<\/li>\n<li>Diminished triads as upper-structure triads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get on with it!<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;As A Passing Chord&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Due to the fact that diminished triads are unstable chords, it&#8217;s appropriate to use them as passing chords to other stable chords like major and minor chords. However, a knowledge of the resolution of the diminished triad is required.<\/p>\n<p>Diminished triads are triads of the seventh degree &#8211; which are usually a half-step below the first degree of the scale. However, before we delve into the application of augmented triads as passing chords, let&#8217;s take a look at the resolution of the augmented triad.<\/p>\n<p>Just like diminished triads, augmented triads resolve to a major [or minor] chord a half step above its root.
