Today, we&#8217;re focusing on one of the several reasons why seventh chords are considered to be harmonically advanced more than triads.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re probably saying <em>&#8220;Well, I don&#8217;t need to be told that seventh chords are harmonically advanced more than triads &#8211; I already know that.&#8221; <\/em>I&#8217;ll still want to recommend this lesson for you, especially if you want to find out little known reasons why seventh chords are ahead of triads.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get started by reviewing triads and seventh chords.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;What Is A Triad?&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>According to Jermaine Griggs, a triad is a collection of three related notes [agreeable or not] that are played or heard together.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking down some of the keywords in the definition of a chord like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Three<\/li>\n<li>Related Notes<\/li>\n<li>Agreeable or Not<\/li>\n<li>Together<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;will give you a bolder relief to the definition of a chord.<\/p>\n<h4><em>&#8220;&#8230;Three&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>The prefix <em>tri <\/em>in the term triad suggests three. Although a chord can consist of four, five, six notes, and more, the number of notes in a triad is limited to three, which is usually made up of the first, third, and seventh tones of the scale.<\/p>\n<h4><em>&#8220;&#8230;Related Notes&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Before any collection of three notes can be labeled as a triad, there must be a scale and intervallic relationship between them.<\/p>\n<p>The notes of a triad can be said to have a scale relationship if they belong to the same scale. For example, the notes of the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which are C, E, and G are the first, third, and fifth tones of the C natural major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In terms of intervallic relationship, the distance between successive chord tones must be based on a fixed interval. In the case of the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the distance between C and E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;or E and G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/the-power-of-third-intervals\">third interval<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell, every collection of three notes must have scale and intervallic relationship before they can be considered as a triad.<\/p>\n<h4><em>&#8220;&#8230;Agreeable Or Not&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>A triad is a collection of notes, and the relationship between these notes when they are heard together [as a chord] is known as harmony. Due to the fact that harmony can either sound agreeable (aka &#8211; &#8220;consonant&#8221;) or not (aka &#8211; &#8220;dissonant&#8221;), a triad can either be consonant or dissonant.<\/p>\n<h4><em>&#8220;&#8230;Together&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>One of the most important words in the definition of a triad is <em>together<\/em>. The old English word for <em>together<\/em> (which is <strong>accord)<\/strong> is the root word for the term chord.<\/p>\n<p>In standard practice, a collection of three notes can only be considered as a chord if they are played or heard together &#8211; in accord.<\/p>\n<h3>A Short Note On Triad Qualities<\/h3>\n<p>There are four known triad qualities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The major triad<\/li>\n<li>The minor triad<\/li>\n<li>The diminished triad<\/li>\n<li>The augmented triad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;and Jermaine Griggs (our founder) has long before now introduced them to us as the fantastic four!<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Here Are The Four Known Triad Qualities Starting From The Note C&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe C minor triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Eb,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe C diminished triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Eb,Gb,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe C augmented triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,Gs,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nNow that we&#8217;ve covered triads, let&#8217;s proceed to seventh chords.<\/p>\n<h2>A Quick Review On Seventh Chords<\/h2>\n<p>Looking at term <em>seventh chord<\/em> literally, a beginner can think of it as a chord of seven notes. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>However, a seventh chord is a chord that encompasses seven degrees of a given scale when played in root position.<\/p>\n<p>A triad when played in root position encompasses a fifth. Extending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/how-music-scholars-classify-chords\">width<\/a> of a triad by a third produces a seventh chord. A typical example is the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which encompasses a fifth (from C to G):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nExtending the width of C-E-G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;by a third to C-E-G-B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;produces a seventh chord &#8211; encompassing seven degrees of the C natural major scale (from C to B):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,Gs,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nAll the keywords we broke down in the definition of a triad like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related Notes<\/li>\n<li>Agreeable or Not<\/li>\n<li>Together<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;are applicable to seventh chords as well.<\/p>\n<h3>Seventh Chord Qualities<\/h3>\n<p>There are tons of seventh chord qualities out there, however, these five seventh chord qualities are commonly used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/major-seventh-chord\">The major seventh chord<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/dominant-seventh-chord\">The dominant seventh chord<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/minor-seventh-chord\">The minor seventh chord<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/half-diminished-seventh-chord\">The half-diminished seventh chord<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/diminished-seventh-chord\">The diminished seventh chord<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;especially in gospel and jazz styles.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Check Out The Five Commonly Used Seventh Chord Qualities Starting From The Note C&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The C major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,B,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe C dominant seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,Bb,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe C minor seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Eb,G,Bb,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe C half-diminished seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Eb,Gb,Bb,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe C diminished seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Eb,Gb,A,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Submission <\/strong>: The appropriate spelling of the C diminished seventh chord is C-Eb-Gb-Bbb. However, I spelled the &#8216;Bbb&#8217; as &#8216;A&#8217; because my virtual keyboard tool does not spell double flat notes yet.<\/p>\n<p>Seventh chords are harmonically ahead of triads in width, note-aggregate, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In width<\/strong>. The width of a chord is determined by the number of scale degrees it encompasses. Seventh chords encompass a seventh interval while triads encompass a fifth interval.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In note-aggregate<\/strong>. A triad is made up of three notes while a seventh chord consists of four notes. If you do the math, a triad has just 75% of the note aggregate of a seventh chord.<\/p>\n<h2>Exposed: One More Reason Why Seventh Chords Are Harmonically Ahead of Triads<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond the regular reasons why seventh chords are usually considered to be harmonically ahead of triads, there&#8217;s a little known reason I&#8217;d want to share with you.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Pay Attention&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Triads are not harmonically developed like seventh chords. (Don&#8217;t worry, I&#8217;ll explain.) The orientation of a triad is bound to change when it evolves into a seventh chord.<\/p>\n<p>When a scale degree chord is a major triad, it can either evolve into a major seventh or a dominant seventh chord. For example, the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;can either become a C major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,B,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;or a C dominant seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,Bb,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe same thing is obtainable in the minor triad. The minor triad can either evolve into a minor seventh chord or a minor [major seventh chord.] The C minor triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Eb,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;can either evolve into a C minor seventh:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Eb,G,Bb,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;or C minor [major seventh] chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Eb,G,B,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nAt the level of scale degree triads in the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;there are three major triads &#8211; the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the F major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,A,C&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and the G major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,B,D&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nHowever, at the level of scale degree seventh chords, we have two major seventh chords:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C major seventh chord<\/p>\n<p>F major seventh chord<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;and one dominant seventh chord:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>G dominant seventh chord<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are two (out of the several) questions I ask myself:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Why does the orientation of scale degree triads change at the level of scale degree seventh chords?<\/li>\n<li>Why can&#8217;t all major triads become seventh chords?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Diminished and augmented triads are not left out too. The B diminished triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,D,F&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;can either evolve into a B half-diminished seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,D,F,A&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;or a B diminished seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,D,F,Ab&amp;color=FFFF99&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Final Words<\/h2>\n<p>Seventh chords will always be harmonically ahead of triads.
