It is no longer a secret that a particular chord progression can be used to play tons of songs &#8211; all experienced musicians will tell you this.<\/p>\n<p>If you give me your undivided attention, in the next 15 minutes or so, you&#8217;ll be learning a chord progression that is commonly used in gospel songs &#8211; especially in songs that are classified as worship songs.<\/p>\n<h2>A Short Breakdown Of The Term Chord Progression<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>The harmonic movement from one chord to another creates a chord progression.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In any given key (be it a major or minor key), there are eight degrees. Using the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=3366CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;as a reference, we have:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C as the first degree (aka &#8211; &#8220;the tonic&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>D as the second degree (aka &#8211; &#8220;the supertonic&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>E as the third degree (aka &#8211; &#8220;the mediant&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>F as the fourth degree (aka &#8211; &#8220;the subdominant&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>G as the fifth degree (aka &#8211; &#8220;the dominant&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>A as the sixth degree (aka &#8211; &#8220;the submediant&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>B as the seventh degree (aka &#8211; &#8220;the subtonic&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>C as the eighth degree (aka &#8211; &#8220;the octave&#8221;)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The movement of chords from one degree of the scale in a given key to another creates a chord progression.<\/p>\n<p>Although there are various classes and types of chord progressions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chromatic and diatonic chord progressions<\/li>\n<li>Cyclical and non-cyclical chord progressions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;and so on, we&#8217;re focusing on one of the long-established chord progressions that have taken a common place in worship songs.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;What Is A Cyclical Progression?&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Due to the fact that the chord progression you&#8217;re about to learn is a cyclical chord progression, we&#8217;ll invest a few minutes into the review of cyclical progressions.<\/p>\n<h3><em><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>In chord progressions, Chord 1 can move to any scale degree chord ranging from chord 2 to chord 7 in an unpredictable manner.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclical chord progressions are <em>predictable <\/em>chord progressions where the root of a chord moves in a certain interval.<\/p>\n<p>In music, the strongest movement between chords is in fifths and fourths. Chord progressions that are based on root movements in fourths and fifths are called cyclical progressions and this is because they move in a cycle using the same interval.<\/p>\n<h4>Fourth Vs Fifth<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Fourth or fifth here has a lot to do with <strong>direction<\/strong>. Cyclical progressions ascend in fourths and descend in fifths. Using the chart below:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circleoffiths1.png\" alt=\"circleoffiths1\" class=\"wp-image-9643 aligncenter\" height=\"320\" width=\"300\" \/><br \/>\nC to G can be a fifth or fourth.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;Here&#8217;s how&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,&amp;color=3366CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n..to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,&amp;color=3366CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;in the ascending direction is a <strong>fifth<\/strong>, encompassing C to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,&amp;color=3366CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;five degrees of the scale.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;&#8230;while&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,&amp;color=3366CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n..to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,,&amp;color=3366CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;in the descending direction is a <strong>fourth<\/strong>, encompassing C to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,A,B,C,&amp;color=3366CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;four degrees of the scale.<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;In music, a fourth is equivalent to an inverted fifth.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Due to the relationship between fourths and fifths, I&#8217;ll recommend that you follow the arrangement of notes in the circle of fifths in a counter clock-wise manner while playing cyclical progressions.<\/p>\n<p>If you follow the circle of fifths\/fourths chat in a counter clockwise manner as recommended, you&#8217;ll certainly find yourself in notes that are foreign to the key that we&#8217;re in.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from C, if we follow the circle:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circleoffiths1.png\" alt=\"circleoffiths1\" class=\"wp-image-9643 aligncenter\" height=\"320\" width=\"300\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;we&#8217;ll have&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>F<\/p>\n<p>Bb<\/p>\n<p>Eb<\/p>\n<p>Ab<\/p>\n<p>Db<\/p>\n<p>etc<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;which are are foreign notes to the C major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=3366CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;save F. Therefore, instead of these foreign notes, we&#8217;ll rather have the notes of the C major scale arranged in fourths.<\/p>\n<p>C to F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\"
