{"id":15962,"date":"2017-01-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-04T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/?p=15962"},"modified":"2024-10-07T01:49:29","modified_gmt":"2024-10-07T09:49:29","slug":"a-lesson-on-the-concept-of-key-signature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hearplaymain.wpenginepowered.com\/a-lesson-on-the-concept-of-key-signature\/","title":{"rendered":"A Lesson On The Concept Of Key-Signature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The concept of key-signature is one of the important things that every serious musician must be acquainted with.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the everyday music we listen to are <em>tonal<\/em> in nature, and that means that they are composed or played on a given key (aka &#8211; &#8220;tonality&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>There are twelve major keys and\u00a0 twelve minor keys &#8211; twenty four keys altogether, and every key has its signature &#8211; which we&#8217;ll be exploring in this lesson.<br \/>\nBut before we get into all of that, let&#8217;s review the concept of key.<\/p>\n<h2>A Review On The Concept Of Key<\/h2>\n<p>Although the term <em>key <\/em>is commonly used by musicians, there&#8217;s need for us to review it before we proceed.<\/p>\n<h3>The Preliminaries<\/h3>\n<p>There are twelve musical notes:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,Cs,D,Ds,E,F,Fs,G,Gs,A,As,B,&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nOn the piano, seven (out of the twelve notes) are white:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and are known to music scholars as naturals, while five are black:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Cs,Ds,Fs,Gs,As,&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and are considered as accidentals.<\/p>\n<h3>The Definition Of A Key<\/h3>\n<p>A key, which is also known as a key center is a tonal environment created by eight tones, with the goal of establishing a given note as the tonic (which is the first and most important note)<\/p>\n<p>For example, a collection of all the white notes on the piano from C to C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;can create a tonal environment where C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the first and most important tone (aka &#8211; &#8220;the tonic&#8221;) This tonal environment:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is called the key of C.<\/p>\n<h3>The Components Of A Key<\/h3>\n<p>Every key has eight components. Here are eight of them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tonic<\/p>\n<p>Supertonic<\/p>\n<p>Mediant<\/p>\n<p>Subdominant<\/p>\n<p>Dominant<\/p>\n<p>Submediant<\/p>\n<p>Subtonic<\/p>\n<p>Octave<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All eight components are vital to a key and every key must have all of these components.<\/p>\n<h3>Two Key Types<\/h3>\n<p>There are two known key types &#8211; major and minor key types. The terms <em>major <\/em>and <em><\/em><em>minor <\/em>are used to describe a tonal environment.<\/p>\n<p>Goodness, light, happiness, etc., are attributed to the major key, while darkness, sadness, the ghostly and fearful, etc., are attributed to the minor key.<\/p>\n<h2>The Concept Of Key-Signature &#8211; <em>Explained<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Apart from the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and A minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;every key has a certain number of sharps and flats in its configuration. Music scholars use the number of sharps and flats in a key to identify it. Hence, every key has its signature, which is determined by the number of sharps and flats in that key.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the key of G major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,A,B,C,D,E,Fs,G&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and the key of E minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,Fs,G,A,B,C,D,E&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;have just one sharp (on F) in their configuration.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the key-signature of key G major and E minor is said to be &#8220;one sharp&#8221; and what this means is that once there&#8217;s only one sharp in the configuration of a key, two possible keys that are implied are the key of G major and the key of E minor.<\/p>\n<p>The use of key-signature is common among sheet musicians.<\/p>\n<p>In sheet music, one of the symbols at the beginning of a piece that helps the musician know the key that the piece of music is written on is the key-signature.<\/p>\n<p>Using the number of sharp or flat symbols, the musician can decode the key that the music is written on.<\/p>\n<p>For musicians who play by the ear, having a knowledge of key-signature is of the greatest possible importance because it helps in the mastery of the traditional scale of\u00a0 that key. For example, the key-signature of Eb major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is &#8220;three flats&#8221; on B, E, and A. This means that all the notes in the key of Eb are white notes (aka &#8211; &#8220;natural notes&#8221;) save B, E, and A, which are flats.<\/p>\n<p>Using all white notes on the keyboard from E to E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and applying flats on B, E, and A to produce the Eb natural major scale.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Check It Out&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Using the natural notes on the piano from E to E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;applying a flat on B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n..to produce Bb:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,F,G,A,Bb,C,D,E&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;then on E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,E&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n..to produce Eb:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,F,G,A,Bb,C,D,Eb&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;then on A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,A,&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;to produce Ab:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nAltogether, that&#8217;s the Eb major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb&amp;color=00CC00&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the traditional scale in the key of Eb major.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Words<\/h2>\n<p>Every serious pianist must have the concept of key-signature at his fingertips.
