It is important for every musician to be acquainted with triads and seventh chords before proceeding into the study of extended chords &#8211; which are much more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Although I&#8217;ll be fair to assume that you&#8217;re already acquainted with triads and seventh chords, however, I&#8217;ll suggest we start this study by reviewing the concept of chords.<\/p>\n<h2>A Quick Review On The Concept Of Chords<\/h2>\n<p>According to Jermaine Griggs, <em>&#8220;a chord is a product of three or more related notes (agreeable or not), which may be played or heard together.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s breakdown some essential keywords in the definition of a chord.<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;&#8230;Three Or More&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>It takes at least three notes to form a chord. This explains why the most basic chords are referred to as triads. In the classification of chords according to the number of notes they consist of, take note of the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Triads<\/strong> are three-note chords<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seventh chords<\/strong> are four-note chords<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extended chords<\/strong> have more than four notes<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><em>&#8220;&#8230;Related Notes&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The notes of a chord must have scale and intervallic relationship. For example, the notes of the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are related by the C major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and that&#8217;s a scale relationship.<\/p>\n<p>C, E, G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which are the tones of the C major triad, are the first, third, and fifth tones of the C major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Furthermore&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The notes of the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are apart from each other in third intervals &#8211; that&#8217;s intervallic relationship.<\/p>\n<p>From C to E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a third interval, and so is E to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,G,,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;&#8230;Together&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The term <em>chord <\/em>is derived from an old English word &#8220;accord&#8221; which means together.<\/p>\n<p>Although the notes of a chord can be broken down into arpeggios, broken chords, etc., a chord is designed to be played or heard together.<\/p>\n<p>This explains why chords are used to harmonize or accompany melodies.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;What Are Extended Chords?&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Triads and seventh chords all fall within the compass of the octave. For example, the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and C major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,B,,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;all fall within the compass of an octave:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,C,&amp;color=6666FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Extended chords exceed the compass of an octave and that&#8217;s why they are classified as\u00a0<em>extended chords<\/em> <em>&#8211;
