If you’re interested in finding out the real musical picture of a key, then you arrived at the right page.<\/p>\n

Although the musical key means different things to different music scholars, I’ll be showing you an ideal picture of what a key actually looks like.<\/p>\n

With the right concept of key, you’ll understand and appreciate the principles of tonal music<\/em> and why some things are the way they are.<\/p>\n

Before we proceed, let’s take a look at the concept of the key.<\/p>\n

A Review On The Concept Of Key<\/h2>\n

According to Jermaine Griggs, “…the term key is used to describe an environment created by a collection of eight notes, geared towards the establishment of a particular note (known as the tonic) as the key center.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The entire keyboard layout:
\n
\n…is a product of the duplication of these twelve notes:
\n
\nEach of these notes can become a key when an environment of eight tones is created, with the goal of establishing the given note as a key center.<\/p>\n

For example, the note C:
\n
\n…is just a note, until an environment of eight tones is created, where C:
\n
\n…is established as the key center.<\/p>\n

A collection of all the white notes on the keyboard from C to C:
\n
\n…produces an environment where C:
\n
\n…is the key center, hence, it is known as the key of C.<\/p>\n

The Components Of A Key<\/h3>\n

Every musical key has eight components:<\/p>\n

The tonic<\/p>\n

The supertonic<\/p>\n

The mediant<\/p>\n

The subdominant<\/p>\n

The dominant<\/p>\n

The submediant<\/p>\n

The subtonic<\/p>\n

The octave<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Without eight of these components, a key cannot be established. In the key of C major:
\n<\/p>\n

C is the tonic<\/p>\n

D is the supertonic<\/p>\n

E is the mediant<\/p>\n

F is the subdominant<\/p>\n

G is the dominant<\/p>\n

A is the submediant<\/p>\n

B is the subtonic<\/p>\n

C is the octave<\/p>\n

Without these key components, there won’t be a key.<\/p>\n

The Real Picture Of A Musical Key<\/h2>\n

One of the common ways to represent a musical key is using its traditional scale<\/a>. The picture that comes to the mind when the key of C is mentioned is its traditional scale – the C major scale:
\n
\n…and this is because it consists of all of the notes in the key of C major.<\/p>\n

In the real picture of a musical key, the tonic – which is the first component in a key – is located at the center of the key environment, with other components around it.<\/p>\n

“Here’s A More Detailed Explanation…”<\/em><\/p>\n

In the key of C major:
\n …C:
\n …is the tonal center.<\/p>\n

On the right side of the key is the dominant – which lies a fifth<\/strong> above the tonic (G in this case):
\n …and on the left side of the key is the subdominant – which lies a fifth below<\/strong> the tonic (F in this case):
\n So, tonic (C):
\n …dominant (G):
\n …and subdominant (F):
\n …gives us a basic structure of the key:
\n …with the tonic at the center.<\/p>\n

“Let’s Talk About The Mediants…”<\/em><\/p>\n

In between the tonic and the dominant (C and G):
\n
\n…is the mediant (which is E):
\n
\n…and in between the subdominant and the tonic (F and C):
\n
\n…is the submediant (which is A):
\n
\nWith the mediants:
\n
\n…we’ll have a better picture of the musical key:
\n<\/p>\n

“Then, Other Elements…”<\/em><\/p>\n

Above<\/strong> the tonic (which is C):
\n
\n…is the supertonic (which is D):
\n
\n…and below<\/strong> the tonic (which is B):
\n
\n…is the supertonic (which is D):

\nAdding these other elements to the picture of the key we got earlier:
