In today\u2019s lesson, we will be looking at the family of the seventh chord<\/p>\n

Knowing and using only the triads is okay, but one thing is that you will sound really basic and nobody wants to remain a \u201cbaby\u201c player for a long time. That\u2019s why I came up with this lesson on the different qualities of seventh chord that you can play to add color to your playing.
\nBefore we any further, let’s review the concept of seventh chords.<\/p>\n

“What Is A Seventh Chord?”<\/em><\/h2>\n

The term seventh<\/em> describes the size of a chord or interval that encompasses seven scale degrees.<\/p>\n

There are different qualities of the seventh interval:<\/p>\n

Major seventh<\/p>\n

Minor seventh<\/p>\n

Diminished seventh<\/p>\n

Augmented seventh<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A Short Note On Seventh Chords<\/h3>\n

A seventh chord consists of four notes that are played together in third intervals, encompassing the distance of a seventh between the root and the seventh chord tone.<\/p>\n

For example, using the C major scale:

\n…a seventh chord can be formed on C:

\n…by adding other chord tones in third intervals. A third interval from C:
\n
\n…is E:
\n
\nAnother third interval from C-E:
\n
\n…is G:

\nAltogether, C-E-G:

Seventh Chord Qualities<\/h2>\n

Although there are various seventh chord types, we’ll be focusing on eighth seventh chord types:<\/p>\n

We’ll be using the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th tones of the major scale as a template in the formation of these seventh chord types.
