{"id":17202,"date":"2017-09-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-13T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/?p=17202"},"modified":"2024-10-05T16:23:52","modified_gmt":"2024-10-06T00:23:52","slug":"important-modes-every-jazz-musician-must-learn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hearplaymain.wpenginepowered.com\/important-modes-every-jazz-musician-must-learn\/","title":{"rendered":"Here Are Important Modes Every Jazz Musician Must Learn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this lesson we&#8217;re focusing on the important modes every jazz musician must learn.<\/p>\n<p>At the earliest stage of jazz studies, it is important for every serious jazz musician to learn and master modes and how they can be transposed to start from any note on the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>Although it&#8217;s of the greatest importance to master all the modes, there are modes that every serious jazz musician must not leave home without; and we&#8217;ll be covering them in this lesson.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s refresh our minds on the concept of modes before we proceed.<\/p>\n<h2>A Short Note On Modes<\/h2>\n<p>For the past 400 years, the concept of key has prevailed and music is either played in the major or minor key.<\/p>\n<p>Before what we know today as key C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;key D:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,E,Fs,G,A,B,Cs,D,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;key E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,Fs,Gs,A,B,Cs,Ds,E,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and so on, modes were used.<\/p>\n<p>A mode consists of a step wise collection of white notes on the piano from a given note till its octave. For example, from B to B (all white notes):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a mode and differs from the key of B major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,Cs,Ds,E,Fs,Gs,As,B,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;or B minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,Cs,D,E,Fs,G,A,B,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nDue to the fact that there are seven white unique notes on the piano, we have seven modes as well:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ionian<\/p>\n<p>Dorian<\/p>\n<p>Phrygian<\/p>\n<p>Lydian<\/p>\n<p>Mixolydian<\/p>\n<p>Aeolian<\/p>\n<p>Locrian<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;and you&#8217;ll do well to check them out.<\/p>\n<p>C to C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the ionian mode.<\/p>\n<p>D to D:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the dorian mode.<\/p>\n<p>E to E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the phrygian mode.<\/p>\n<p>F to F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the lydian mode.<\/p>\n<p>G to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the mixolydian mode.<\/p>\n<p>A to A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the aeolian mode.<\/p>\n<p>B to B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the locrian mode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attention:<\/strong> All seven modes are unique, save for the ionian and aeolian modes &#8212; which are similar to the major and minor key respectively.<\/p>\n<h2>Essential Modes Serious Jazz Musicians Cannot Do Without<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s go ahead and explore two modes that every serious musician must not leave home without.<\/p>\n<h3>The Lydian Mode<\/h3>\n<p>The lydian mode is the fourth mode and can be formed by starting on F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;an ending on F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,F,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nSo, playing from F to F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;produces the lydian mode.<\/p>\n<p>The lydian mode sounds a lot better than the natural major scale in Jazz improvisation. For example, the F lydian mode:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;sounds a lot better than the F natural major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,G,A,Bb,C,D,E,F,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;when played over the F major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,A,C,E,&amp;color=3CB371&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;because the fourth tone (aka &#8211; &#8220;avoid tone&#8221;) is raised by a half step. This is the characteristic difference between the natural major scale and the lydian mode.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, raising the fourth tone of the natural major scale produces the lydian mode.
