Do This!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this lesson, I&#8217;ll be showing you step-by-step, how to play chromatic bass lines using two approaches.<\/p>\n<p>The use of chromatic bass lines in gospel and jazz music styles cannot be denied; especially in traditional styles. Therefore, it&#8217;s important for every gospel and jazz musician to learn, understand, and master chromatic bass lines and how they are applied.<\/p>\n<p>For the sake of those who are not familiar with what chromatic bass lines are, let&#8217;s start with a brief discussion on chromatic bass lines.<\/p>\n<h2>A Short Note On Chromatic Bass Lines<\/h2>\n<p>The lowest notes accompanying chords (which can be played by low-pitched instruments like the bass guitar) are known as bass lines.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond being notes, bass lines are rhythmically designed to add a degree of groove to a song. Think about the walking bass lines you hear in traditional praise songs in gospel music.<\/p>\n<p>Chromatic bass lines are produced when the notes used are foreign to the prevalent key. In the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the use of the following notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C# or Db<\/p>\n<p>D# or Eb<\/p>\n<p>F# or Gb<\/p>\n<p>G# or Ab<\/p>\n<p>A# or Bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;to create bass lines would produce chromatic bass lines.<\/p>\n<p>When a bass note (let&#8217;s say A):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;in the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which is usually approached using G (as a passing note):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is now approached using G#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Gs,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;or Bb:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Bb,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;this produces a chromatic bass line and this is because neither G# nor Bb are scale tones of the C major scale.<\/p>\n<p>Although there are so many considerations while creating chromatic bass lines, let&#8217;s go ahead and take a look at two ways to approach bass notes in order to create chromatic bass lines.<\/p>\n<h2>Approach #1 &#8211; <em>Use Leading Notes<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>One of the ways bass notes can be approached to create chromatic bass lines is by the use of the leading note. The leading note is <em>technically<\/em> the note that is a half-step below any given note.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the leading note for C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and this is because B is a half-step below C.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In the Key of C Major, Here are the Leading Notes for Every Other Bass Note in the Key&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Second Tone.<\/strong> For the second tone of the scale (which is D):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;its leading note is C#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Cs,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which is a half-step below D.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Third Tone.<\/strong> The leading note of the third tone of the scale (which is E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=E,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is D#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Ds,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and it&#8217;s a half-step below E.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fourth Tone.<\/strong> The fourth tone of the scale (F):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=F,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;has E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=E,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;as its leading note. However, the leading note in this case will not create a chromatic bass line because E is a scale tone in the key of C major.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fifth Tone.<\/strong> A half-step below the fifth tone of the scale (which is G):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is F#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Fs,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nTherefore, F# is the leading note of G.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Sixth Tone.<\/strong> For the sixth tone of the scale (which is A):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;its leading note is G#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Gs,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which is a half-step below A.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Seventh Tone.<\/strong> The leading note of the seventh tone of the scale (which is B):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is A#:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=As,,,&amp;color=CCFF66&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and it&#8217;s a half-step below B.<\/p>\n<p>Using the leading notes given for each bass\u00a0 note in the key of C major, you can create chromatic bass lines.<\/p>\n<h2>Approach #2 &#8211; Take Advantage Of <em>Tritone Substitution<\/em><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Content would be available shortly.
