The drop-2 voicing technique is commonly used in a variety of music styles; predominantly in gospel and jazz harmony and this is because of its appeal.<\/p>\n

If you’re just coming across the drop-2 voicing concept for the first time, don’t worry! We’re starting out with a thorough explanation of the drop-2 voicing before proceeding to learning how it can be derived.<\/p>\n

Let’s get started!<\/p>\n

“What Is The Voicing?”<\/em><\/em><\/h2>\n

The concept of voicing in music is concerned with the consideration of the notes of a chord as a voices or voice parts. If you’ve been around the choir for sometime now, you must have heard of these voice parts: bass, tenor, alto, and soprano.<\/p>\n

The notes of the C major seventh chord:
\n
\n…can be considered as the following voices…<\/p>\n

C:
\n
\n…is the bass<\/strong> voice or fourth voice.<\/p>\n

E:
\n
\n…is the tenor<\/strong> voice or third voice.<\/p>\n

G:
\n
\n…is the alto <\/strong>voice or second voice.<\/p>\n

B:
\n
\n…is the soprano<\/strong> voice or first voice.<\/p>\n

The Drop-2 Voicing Concept — Explained<\/em><\/h2>\n

In the drop-2 voicing, the second voice or the alto voice of the chord is transposed by an octave. The octave transposition of the alto voice in a chord produces its drop-2 voicing.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0C major seventh chord:
\n
\n…the second voice (aka – “the alto voice”) is the G note:
\n
\nThe octave transposition of G (the alto voice) from its position:
\n
\n…to a lower octave:
\n
\n…produces the drop-2 voicing of the C major seventh chord:
\n
\nVoicing any other chord in a way that the alto voice is an octave lower than its position, produces the drop-2 voicing.<\/p>\n

How To Derive The Drop-2 Voicing Of A Chord<\/h2>\n

The drop-2 voicing of any triad or seventh chord can be determined in 3 seconds or less and here’s a breakdown of how the three seconds can be invested:<\/p>\n

“In The First Second…”<\/em><\/h3>\n

You should be looking out for the alto voice of the chord. Irrespective of the inversion of the chord played, the alto voice remains the second to the highest-sounding pitch in the chord.<\/p>\n

For example, the (second inversion of the) D major seventh chord below:
\n
\n…has D:
\n
\n…as the second to the highest-sounding pitch in the chord. Therefore, D is the alto voice:
\n
\n…of the third inversion of the D major seventh chord:
\n
\nRemember, this shouldn’t take more than a second. As soon as you can visualize the chord, you can spot the alto voice.<\/p>\n

“In The Second Second…”<\/em><\/h3>\n

At this point, you should be transferring the alto voice from its position to a lower octave and this is easy if you’ve mastered the art of octave transposition<\/a>. In the case of the D major seventh chord:

\n…the alto voice (which is D):
\n
\n…can be transposed to a lower D:
\n
\nTechnically, what happens here is that the alto voice is transferred from the right hand to the left hand. So, the octave transposition of the alto voice technically <\/em>transfers the alto voice from the right hand to the left hand.<\/p>\n

In The Third Second…”<\/em><\/h3>\n

Here’s where to put every piece of the puzzle together to produce the main picture.\u00a0 The alto voice, which was transposed to the left hand and a lower octave as well and the rest of the voices are played together to produce the drop-2 voicing.<\/p>\n

In the case of the D major seventh chord:

\n…the transposed alto voice is D:
\n
\n…and the rest of the voices are A, C#, and F#:
\n
\nAltogether, we have the drop-2 voicing of the (second inversion of the) D major seventh chord:
