One of the important aspects of musical development every serious musician must not joke with is ear training.<\/p>\n

The ear is to the musicians what the eyes are to the painter. A deaf musician is just as unfortunate as a blind painter and that’s because colors are to the eyes what sounds are to the ears.<\/p>\n

We’ll be looking at the aspects of ear training and also stressing its importance. But before we get into all of that, let’s define ear training.<\/p>\n

Ear training is the musical skill that lets a musician identify pitches, rhythm, and other elements of music.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Attention:<\/strong> In this lesson, we’re narrowing the concept of ear training down to the identification of pitches.<\/p>\n

Aspects Of Ear Training<\/h2>\n

There are so many aspects of ear training. However, for the purpose of this study we’ll be emphasizing on the following aspects:<\/p>\n

Note awareness<\/p>\n

Scale awareness<\/p>\n

Interval awareness<\/p>\n

Chord awareness<\/p>\n

Progression awareness<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s get going.<\/p>\n

Note Awareness<\/h3>\n

Note awareness is concerned with the ability to recognize or produce a pitch by ear (with or without a pitch reference). For example, when the note C:
\n
\n…is played and heard, note awareness is the ability to recognize or produce any other pitch on the keyboard using C as a reference.<\/p>\n

Scale Awareness<\/h3>\n

Scales are usually played or heard in ascending and descending order and when played or heard, it takes scale awareness to know the scale type that is played.<\/p>\n

The scales below have a lot of notes in common:<\/p>\n

C Aeolian scale:
\n
\nC Phrygian scale:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The only difference between both scales is that the second tone of the C Dorian scale is D while that of the C Aeolian scale is Db.<\/p>\n

Interval Awareness<\/h3>\n

When two notes are played (be it together or separately, interval awareness helps you understand the distance between them.<\/p>\n

The interval below (C-E):

\n….is different from this interval (C-Eb):
\n
\nThe former is the major third interval (C-E) while the latter is the minor third interval (C-Eb) and they sound different.<\/p>\n

Chord Awareness<\/h3>\n

There are tons of chord qualities: ranging from major chords, to minor chords, diminished chords, augmented chords, dominant chords, altered chords, suspended chords, etc., and they come as triads, seventh, and extended chords.<\/p>\n

The difference between the C major triad:
\n
\n…and the C minor triad:
\n
\n…is perceptible by someone who has developed his\/her chord awareness. Also, chord awareness can help you tell the exact inversion or voicing of a chord.<\/p>\n

The Importance Of Ear Training<\/h2>\n

Although ear-training is very important to all musicians (irrespective of whether they are sheet musicians or they play by ear), musicians who play by the ear should take it more seriously.<\/p>\n

From note awareness to scale awareness; interval awareness to chord awareness and lastly to progression awareness, every aspect of ear-training is important and this is because songs can be broken down into melodic and harmonic components.<\/p>\n

Melodic components<\/strong> include the melody (aka -“tune”), the bass lines, etc., which are basically made up of notes, scales, and intervals.<\/p>\n

Harmonic components<\/strong> include the harmony (comprising of chords), progressions, etc., which are basically made up of intervals, chords and progressions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For musicians who play by the ear, the awareness of notes, scales, intervals, chords, and progressions will help you listen to a song and play it on your instrument with ease.<\/p>\n

According to Jermaine Griggs<\/strong> “if you can hear it, you can play it” <\/em>and that’s absolutely right.<\/p>\n

But if I may add something in between the first and second part of that phrase (that has shaped music learning for 2 decades now and counting), I’ll add “…and you’re aware…”. <\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s what becomes of the famous quote by me role-model (Jermaine Griggs):<\/p>\n

“If you can hear it (and you’re aware), you can play it”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’m sure he’ll smile when he sees this. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

“In A Nutshell…”<\/em><\/p>\n

The same way painters are familiar with colors and shades, that’s how a musician should be familiar with notes, scales, intervals, chords, progressions, etc.<\/p>\n
