Explained — The Difference Between The G# and Ab Bass Notes<\/h2>\n

In between G and A:

\n…is a black note. This black note (in between G and A) can either be spelled in two simple ways:<\/p>\n

\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, the bass note in between G and A can either be G# or Ab and this depends on the function of the bass note. There are two bass note functions for the black note in between G and A:<\/p>\n

Leading note<\/p>\n

Tritone Substitute<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s go ahead and explore how this works.<\/p>\n

G# As The Leading Note vs Db as The Tritone Substitute<\/h3>\n

The difference between the leading note and the tritone substitute is basically how they resolve.<\/p>\n

The leading note resolves upwards<\/em> by a half-step while the tritone substitute resolves downwards<\/em> by a half-step.<\/p>\n

Here’s the distinction between the leading note and the tritone substitute:<\/p>\n

G#:
\n
\n…is a leading note. Therefore it resolves upwards<\/strong> by a half-step to A:
\n
\nAb:
\n
\n…is a tritone substitute. Therefore it resolves downwards<\/strong> by a half-step to G:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s take a closer look.<\/p>\n

G# As The Leading Note<\/h3>\n

A leading note is usually a half-step below a given note. Let’s say you’re given F:
\n
\n…to determine its leading note, the leading note of F is the note that is a half-step below it.<\/p>\n

A half-step below F:
\n
\n…is E:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, considering that a half-step below F is E, the leading note of F is E. The leading note (which is E) resolves upwards by a half-step (to F).<\/p>\n

“Now, Back To G#…”<\/em><\/p>\n

G# functions as a leading note and just like every leading note, it resolves upwards by a half-step to A. So, if you have a G# bass note:

\n…in the key of C:
\n
\n…it will resolve upwards by a half-step to A and the right hand chord will also resolve to any of these 6-chord types:<\/p>\n

A minor triad:

\nA minor seventh chord:

\nD minor ninth chord:

Ab as The Tritone Substitute<\/h3>\n

A tritone (three whole steps) above Ab is D:
\n<\/p>\n

Ab to Bb (first whole step):<\/p>\n


\nBb to C (second whole step):

\nC to D (third whole step):
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ab as a tritone substitute means that Ab is substituting D:
\n
\n…which is the 2nd tone in the C major scale:

\nSo, the right hand chords played over the Ab bass note:

\n…are substituting the right hand chords played over the D bass note:

\nTake note that the D bass note usually resolves to the G bass note:

\nIn the same vein, the Ab bass note:
