“What Is A B Bass Note”<\/em><\/h2>\n

B is considered as a bass note when it is the lowest-sounding note of any given chord. For example, the lowest-sounding note in the chord below:

B As “The 7” vs B As “The 5-of-3”<\/h3>\n

The B bass note has two functions in the key of C major:<\/p>\n

As “the 7”<\/p>\n

As “the 5-of-3”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s go ahead and learn what B as “the 7” means, and also understand how it differs from B as “the 5-of-3”.<\/p>\n

B As “The 7”<\/h3>\n

In the key of C major:
\n
\n…B is the seventh tone and has its place in the number system as “the 7”. When the B bass note is functioning as “the 7”, the right hand chord will be a scale-tone chord: be it a triad, seventh, or extended chord.<\/p>\n

What this means is that chords associated with the B bass note when it’s functioning as “the 7” are chords in the key you’re in and we’ll be covering those chords shortly.<\/p>\n

B As “The 5-of-3”<\/h3>\n

The term “5-of-3” literally means the<\/em> dominant of the third <\/em>and this means that B is used as the dominant chord (or passing chord) that resolves to the 3-chord.<\/p>\n

The third tone in the key of C major is E:
\n
\n…therefore, B as “the 5-of-3” means that B is resolving to any 3-chord in the key of C major; which includes (but isn’t limited to) any of the following chords:<\/p>\n

The E minor triad:

So, B bass note as “the 5-of-3” refers to B dominant chord types and we’ll be looking at the right hand chords for the B bass note in subsequent segments.<\/p>\n

Right Hand Chords For B As “The 6”<\/h2>\n

Attention:<\/strong> Right hand chords for the A bass note as “the 6” depends on factors like skill level, musical taste, etc. There are situations that an advanced player may want to use basic chords instead of sophisticated chords.<\/p>\n
