For example, the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;has the key of C minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;as its parallel minor key.<\/p>\n<h3>The Concept Of Relative Keys<\/h3>\n<p>Beyond the parallel relationship between major and minor keys, there&#8217;s also a relative relationship between major and minor keys.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Here&#8217;s How It Works&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and the key of A minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are said to be relative keys because they have the same key-signature (sharing exactly the same notes).<\/p>\n<p>The notes in the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and A minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;are basically the same notes. From C to C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;produces the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;while from A to A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,A,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;produces the key of A minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;So, What Are Relative Keys?&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Relative keys share the same notes in common. Unlike parallel keys where the notes differ.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Check Out These Two Parallel Keys&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is parallel to the key of C minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and they don&#8217;t have the same notes.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Now, Carefully Check These Relative Keys Out&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;has the key of A minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;as its relative minor key.<\/p>\n<h3>How To Determine The Relative Minor Key Of Any Given Major Key<\/h3>\n<p>The relative minor key of any given major key can be determined by going down by a minor third or three half-steps from the first tone of the given major key.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the relative minor of the key of Bb major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G,A,Bb,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;can be determined by going down three half-steps from Bb:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bb to A:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the first half-step.<\/p>\n<p>A to Ab:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Ab,,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the second half-step.<\/p>\n<p>Ab to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the third half-step.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, the relative minor key to the key of Bb major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G,A,Bb,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the key of G minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,A,Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nA closer look at both keys shows that they are basically consist of the same notes. However, while the key of Bb major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G,A,Bb,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is from Bb to Bb:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Bb,Bb,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the key of G minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,A,Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;has exactly the same notes from G to G:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,G,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nHere&#8217;s the music clock:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/circleoffiths1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9643\" width=\"300\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;which is a geometrical representation of the major keys and their relative minor keys.<\/p>\n<h2>The Common Misconception Of The Relative Minor Key<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s a common mistake a vast majority of musicians make and I&#8217;ll be showing you that misconception of the relative minor key shortly.<\/p>\n<p>But before I do so, remember this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The relative minor key is ALWAYS three half-steps below any given major key<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;Alright&#8230;Here&#8217;s The Misconception&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Instead of going down by three half-steps from any given major key, a lot of musicians actually go up by three half-steps to another major key.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when they&#8217;re in the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;they understand the relative minor key as the major key that is three half-steps above C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThree half-steps above C is Eb:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C to Db:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Db,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the first half-step.<\/p>\n<p>Db to D:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the second half-step.<\/p>\n<p>D to Eb:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is the third half-step.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A vast majority of musicians consider the key of Eb major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;as the relative minor key to the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;.AND THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG!<\/p>\n<h2>Final Words<\/h2>\n<p>The relative minor key to the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is always the key of A minor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,,&amp;color=999933&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and must always be a minor key.<\/p>\n<p>Going up by three half-steps to another key takes us into a <em>related key <\/em>and not a relative key.
