In this lesson we’ll be clearing off the misconception of the relative minor key.<\/p>\n

If you’ve been around musicians for a long while, you must have come across the concept of the relative minor key; especially the common misconception out there.<\/p>\n

A good way to start this lesson is with an explanation of the concept of the relative minor key.<\/p>\n

“What Is A Relative Minor Key?”<\/em><\/h2>\n

There are 24 keys in tonal music:<\/p>\n

12 major keys<\/p>\n

12 minor keys<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Every major key has its parallel minor key. For example, the key of C major:
\n
\n…has the key of C minor:
\n
\n…as its parallel minor key.<\/p>\n

The Concept Of Relative Keys<\/h3>\n

Beyond the parallel relationship between major and minor keys, there’s also a relative relationship between major and minor keys.<\/p>\n

“Here’s How It Works…”<\/em><\/p>\n

The key of C major:
\n
\n…and the key of A minor:
\n
\n…are said to be relative keys because they have the same key-signature (sharing exactly the same notes).<\/p>\n

The notes in the key of C major:
\n
\n…and A minor:
\n
\n…are basically the same notes. From C to C:
\n
\n…produces the key of C major:
\n
\n…while from A to A:
\n
\n…produces the key of A minor:
\n<\/p>\n

“So, What Are Relative Keys?”<\/em><\/h3>\n

Relative keys share the same notes in common. Unlike parallel keys where the notes differ.<\/p>\n

“Check Out These Two Parallel Keys…”<\/em><\/p>\n

The key of C major:
\n
\n…is parallel to the key of C minor:
\n
\n…and they don’t have the same notes.<\/p>\n

“Now, Carefully Check These Relative Keys Out…”<\/em><\/p>\n

The key of C major:
\n
\n…has the key of A minor:
\n
\n…as its relative minor key.<\/p>\n

How To Determine The Relative Minor Key Of Any Given Major Key<\/h3>\n

The relative minor key of any given major key can be determined by going down by a minor third or three half-steps from the first tone of the given major key.<\/p>\n

For example, the relative minor of the key of Bb major:
\n
\n…can be determined by going down three half-steps from Bb:<\/p>\n

Bb to A:
\n
\n…the first half-step.<\/p>\n

A to Ab:
\n
\n…the second half-step.<\/p>\n

Ab to G:
\n
\n…the third half-step.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, the relative minor key to the key of Bb major:
\n
\n…is the key of G minor:
\n
\nA closer look at both keys shows that they are basically consist of the same notes. However, while the key of Bb major:
\n
\n…is from Bb to Bb:
\n
\n…the key of G minor:
\n
\n…has exactly the same notes from G to G:
\n
\nHere’s the music clock:<\/p>\n

…which is a geometrical representation of the major keys and their relative minor keys.<\/p>\n

The Common Misconception Of The Relative Minor Key<\/h2>\n

There’s a common mistake a vast majority of musicians make and I’ll be showing you that misconception of the relative minor key shortly.<\/p>\n

But before I do so, remember this:<\/p>\n

The relative minor key is ALWAYS three half-steps below any given major key<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Alright…Here’s The Misconception”<\/em><\/p>\n

Instead of going down by three half-steps from any given major key, a lot of musicians actually go up by three half-steps to another major key.<\/p>\n

For example, when they’re in the key of C major:
\n
\n…they understand the relative minor key as the major key that is three half-steps above C:
\n
\nThree half-steps above C is Eb:<\/p>\n

C to Db:
\n
\n…is the first half-step.<\/p>\n

Db to D:
\n
\n…is the second half-step.<\/p>\n

D to Eb:
\n
\n…is the third half-step.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A vast majority of musicians consider the key of Eb major:
\n
\n…as the relative minor key to the key of C major:
\n
\n….AND THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG!<\/p>\n

Final Words<\/h2>\n

The relative minor key to the key of C major:
\n
\n…is always the key of A minor:
\n
\n…and must always be a minor key.<\/p>\n

Going up by three half-steps to another key takes us into a related key <\/em>and not a relative key. In a subsequent lesson, we’ll learn what related keys are and also distinguish them from relative keys.<\/p>\n
