It&#8217;s because of you that we&#8217;re starting out in the next segment by providing you with some valuable insights on what the tritone is.<\/p>\n<p>If you already know what a tritone is, it&#8217;s fine if you skip the next segment. However, I&#8217;ll recommend that you refresh your mind on the tritone in preparation for what we&#8217;re about to study.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;What Is A Tritone?&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The term <em>tritone <\/em>literally means <em>three tones <\/em>or <em>three whole steps.<\/em> So, a tritone consists of three whole steps.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Give Me Your Undivided Attention&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;three whole steps above or below produces the tritone.<\/p>\n<p>Three whole steps <strong>above<\/strong> F, we have:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>F to G (a whole step):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nG to A (a whole step):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,A,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nA to B (a whole step):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,B,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;altogether, F to B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,B,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is\u00a0 a tritone.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We Could Also Descend To Form The Tritone&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Three whole steps <strong>below<\/strong> F, we have:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>F to D#(a whole step):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Ds,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nD# to C# (a whole step):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Cs,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nC# to B (a whole step):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;altogether, B to F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,F,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is\u00a0 a tritone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Going down from F to B produces the B-F tritone and not the F-B tritone. This is because the tritone is an interval and intervals are reckoned upwards from the lower note (which is B in this case).<\/p>\n<p>So, three whole steps from any given note, in any direction (ascending or descending) produces a tritone.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;All Tritones Are Not The Same&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>We derived two tritones &#8212; F-B and B-F:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>F-B tritone:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,B,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nB-F tritone:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,F,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;in the previous segment. Although these tritones are related in several ways (both are made up of F and B), they are not the same.<\/p>\n<p>An intervallic breakdown of the tritone will give us a better understanding.<\/p>\n<h3>The Intervallic Breakdown Of The Tritone<\/h3>\n<p>Tritones:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>F-B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,B,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nB-F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,F,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;can also be considered as intervals and every interval has two aspects: its size and its quality. So, we&#8217;ll be looking at the size and quality of both tritones.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;A Breakdown Of The Size Of The Tritones&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The F-B tritone:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,B,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a fourth interval and this is because there are four letter names between F and B:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>F, G, A, and B (four letter names):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,G,A,B,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The B-F tritone:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,F,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is larger than the F-B tritone; it encompasses a fifth interval (from B to F):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>B, C, D, E, and F (five letter names):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,C,D,E,F,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, a breakdown of the size of both tritones shows that they are different in size: one is a fourth and the other a fifth.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;A Short Note On The Quality Of The Tritones&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Time will fail me to show you why the F-B tritone is an augmented interval and the B-F interval is a diminished interval.<\/p>\n<p>However, I want you to note that F-B is &#8220;larger&#8221; than F-Bb (which is a perfect fourth interval):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,Bb,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;by a half-step.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attention: <\/strong>Note that larger intervals are augmented intervals.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the B-F tritone is &#8220;smaller&#8221; than B-F# (a perfect fifth interval):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,Fs,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;by a half-step and intervals that are smaller than perfect intervals by a half-step are known as diminished intervals.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;&#8230;Here&#8217;s Why&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The tritone can either be an augmented fourth (in the case of F-B) or a diminished fifth interval (in the case of B-F) and it is worthy to note that both tritones (F-B and B-F) differ in size and quality.<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;Tritones Differ In Quality&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Although they are all tritones, one is an augmented interval and the other is a diminished interval.<\/p>\n<p>F-B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,B,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is an augmented interval, while B-F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,F,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a diminished fifth interval.<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;Tritones Differ In Size&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>One of the differences between these tritones:<\/p>\n<p>F-B:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,B,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nB-F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=B,F,,&amp;color=CCCCCC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;is their size. The former is a fourth interval while the latter is a fifth interval.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Words<\/h2>\n<p>Understanding the difference between the tritone and the inverted tritone is very important for scholarly musicians. If you&#8217;re a hobby player or someone who is not really interested in learning a lot about the theoretical aspect of intervals, you may not really appreciate this information.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll
