Harmonization<\/p>\n<p>2. Accompaniment<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Eventually, a keyboard-playing musician should be able to explore the secondary purposes of chords; ranging from arpeggios and broken chords, to reharmonization, etc. But his\/her basic role (especially) in a band situation is accompaniment.<\/p>\n<h2>Goal #1 &#8211; <em>&#8220;To Learn Triads And Seventh Chords&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Although there are tons of chords a keyboard player should be conversant with, there are four triad types that every beginner should be acquainted with:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The major triad<\/p>\n<p>The minor triad<\/p>\n<p>The augmented triad<\/p>\n<p>The diminished triad<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;and five seventh chord types every intermediate player should be acquainted with:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The major seventh chord<\/p>\n<p>The minor seventh chord<\/p>\n<p>The dominant seventh chord<\/p>\n<p>The half-diminished seventh chord<\/p>\n<p>The diminished seventh chord<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s pretty a handful right?<\/p>\n<h2>Goal #2 &#8211; <em>&#8220;To Be Thorough With Chords&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>All the required triads and seventh chords should be known in all the keys in root position and every possible inversion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1st inversion<\/p>\n<p>2nd inversion<\/p>\n<p>3rd inversion (for seventh chords only)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The color pattern and finger placement of chords should be observed. For example, the following chords have the same color pattern and finger placement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,A,Cs,E,Gs,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nD major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,Fs,A,Cs,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nE major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,Gs,B,Ds,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;which is entirely different from the color patterns and finger placement of the following chords:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,B,,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nF major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,A,C,E,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Goal #3 &#8211; <em>&#8220;To Understand The Application Of Chords&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>At the beginning and intermediate phases of the keyboardist&#8217;s development, he or she should be interested in learning how chords are applied.<\/p>\n<p>Among other chord types, it is important to know the application of major, minor, diminished, and dominant chords in the major and minor key.<\/p>\n<p>Chord recognition is not also left out. A keyboard player should be able to hear and recognize chords whether they are played separately or in a chord progression.<\/p>\n<h2>#4 &#8211; <em>&#8220;To Understand <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Smoothness<\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The term <em>smoothness <\/em>within the chord progression context means the close movement of chord tones.<\/p>\n<p>In the key of C major:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;the 1-chord and 4-chord are the C major and F major triads respectively:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1-chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n4-chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,A,C,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If both chords are played successively as a chord progression, there won&#8217;t be smoothness. But using the concept of inversion and voice leading principles, we can have a smooth progression:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1-chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n4-chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,F,A,,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another smooth 1-4 chord progression:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1-chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,G,C,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n4-chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,A,C,&amp;color=3399FF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Keyboard harmony and accompaniment sounds a lot better when played smoothly and that&#8217;s what makes <em>smoothness <\/em>an important aspect of chord progression and songs.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Words<\/h2>\n<p>Chords are great harmonic resources. However, after learning chords for a long while, the musician gets to the point where he\/she will exhaust all the essential chord types that should be a part of their chordal vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>At that point, he\/she would proceed into learning chord voicing techniques, concepts, and stylizations.
