There are theoretical concepts that are associated with the octave and we’re focusing on them in this lesson.<\/p>\n

The octave is the eighth tone of the major scale and it’s considered important because it is a duplicate of the first tone of the scale. Using the C major scale as a reference:
\n
\n…you can clearly see that the first and eight tones are C:<\/p>\n

First tone (C):
\n
\nEighth tone (C):
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…and the distance between these notes (C-C):
\n
\n…or all the notes within its compass:
\n
\n…are considered as an octave.<\/p>\n

We’ll be covering the three Ts of the octave:<\/p>\n

The tetrachord<\/p>\n

The tritone<\/p>\n

The tone of disjunction<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…and at the end of this lesson, you’ll see the octave in a different light.<\/p>\n

Concept #1 — “The Tetrachord”<\/em><\/h2>\n

The major scale encompasses an octave. Placing the C major scale side-by-side with the C octave:<\/p>\n

C major scale:
\n
\nC octave:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…proves this beyond every reasonable doubt.<\/p>\n

The concept of the tetrachord divides the octave-long<\/em> C major scale:
\n
\n…into two parts:<\/p>\n

The lower tetrachord:<\/p>\n

The upper tetrachord:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s throw more light on the tetrachord.<\/p>\n

A Quick Breakdown Of The Tetrachord<\/h3>\n

The notes of the major scale can be divided into two sets; with each set consisting of four notes each. So, the first four notes of the C major scale (which are C, D, E, and F):
\n
\n…make up the lower tetrachord, while the last four notes (which are G, A, B, and C):
\n
\n…make up the upper tetrachord.<\/p>\n

“Tetrachord + Tetrachord = Octave”<\/em><\/h3>\n

Every octave can be broken down two tetrachords and each of the tetrachords consists of 50% of the notes of the major scale.<\/p>\n

For example, the Eb octave:
\n
\n…consists of two tetrachords:<\/p>\n

The lower tetrachord:
\n
\nThe upper tetrachord:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…and this is true for every other octave on the keyboard.<\/p>\n

Concept #2 — “The Tritone”<\/em><\/h2>\n

Yes! There are so many definitions of the tritone out there; the simplest being this:<\/p>\n

A tritone is a distance of three whole-steps (aka – “whole-tones”)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Three whole-steps from C is F#:
\n
\nHere’s a breakdown:<\/p>\n

C to D (first whole-step):
\n
\nD to E (second whole-step):
\n
\nE to F# (third whole-step):
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, the interval (melodic or harmonic) between C and F# is a tritone and it’s know as an augmented fourth interval.<\/p>\n

The Relationship Between The Tritone And The Octave<\/h3>\n

The division of the octave into two equal parts produces the tritone.<\/p>\n

There are twelve half-steps in the octave and the tritone is the interval between a given note and the sixth half-step. For example, the octave of C consists of twelve half-steps:<\/p>\n

C to C:
\n
\nTwelve half-steps:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From C to F# (which is a tritone):
\n
\n…encompasses the first six half-steps, while from F# to C (an inverted tritone):
\n
\n…consists of the remainder six half-steps.<\/p>\n

The division of the octave:
\n
\n…into two equal parts:<\/p>\n

C-F#:
\n
\nF#-C:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…produces the tritone.<\/p>\n

Tritone + Tritone = Octave<\/h3>\n

Two tritones (a tritone and its inversion) add up to produce the octave.<\/p>\n

For example, “E-Bb” and its inversion (which is “Bb-E”):<\/p>\n

E-Bb:
\n
\nBb-E:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…produce the E octave (“E-E”) when added up:
\n
\n…and this is true for every other tritone on the keyboard.<\/p>\n

Concept #3 — “The Tone Of Disjunction”<\/em><\/h2>\n

Every octave is divided into two tetrachords like we covered earlier in this lesson.<\/p>\n

In between the lower and upper tetrachords is a whole-step known as the tone of disjunction that links up both tetrachords. For example, the C major scale:

\n…consists of the following tetrachords:<\/p>\n

The lower tetrachord:
\n
\nThe upper tetrachord:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…and they’re separated by the tone of disjunction, which is the whole-step distance between F and G:
\n
\nAltogether, we have:<\/p>\n

The lower tetrachord:
\n
\nThe tone of disjunction:
\n
\nThe upper tetrachord:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…and this is true for every octave of the major scale.<\/p>\n
