Therefore, beginners may not find it very beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>Although scales with avoid notes still have their place in jazz theory, it&#8217;s always better to improvise with scales that have no avoid notes because of the freedom that comes with the absence of avoid notes.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you&#8217;re interested in attaining that level of freedom, this lesson is for you.<\/p>\n<h2>Quick Insights On The Avoid Note<\/h2>\n<p>In the key of C major, when the C major scale is played over the 1-chord (the C major seventh chord):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nC major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,B,,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All the notes of the scale seem to agree with the 1-chord save for the fourth tone. For a moment, I want you to play F over the C major seventh chord:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>F:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,F,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nC major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,B,,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;and listen out for the unpleasantness (aka &#8211; &#8220;dissonance&#8221;) produced by the note and the chord.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth tone of the major scale is the avoid note in the scale because of the dissonance produce when it&#8217;s played over the 1-chord in the key.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the 1-chord in the major key, you&#8217;ll still have to worry about avoid notes while improvising over the 2-5-1 chord progression.<\/p>\n<h3>Avoid Notes In The 2-5-1 Chord Progression<\/h3>\n<p>The following scale are used over the 2-5-1 chord progression:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Dorian scale (over the 2-chord)<\/p>\n<p>The Mixolydian scale (over the 5-chord)<\/p>\n<p>The natural major scale (over the 1-chord)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;Here&#8217;s A Classic Example In The Key Of C Major With The Avoid Notes&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the 2-chord is the Dorian scale:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>D Dorian scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,D,E,F,G,A,B,Cs,D&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nD minor ninth chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,,F,A,C,E,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and the avoid note is B (the sixth tone of the D Dorian scale):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,B,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the 5-chord is the Mixolydian scale:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>G Mixolydian scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nG dominant ninth chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,F,A,B,D,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and the avoid note is C (the fourth tone of the G Mixolydian scale):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,,C&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Over the 1-chord is the natural major scale:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C natural major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nC major ninth chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,E,G,B,D,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and the avoid note is F (the fourth tone of the C natural major scale):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,,F&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;Can I Show You Scale Options Without Avoid Notes?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are scale options to improvise over the 2-5-1 chord progression with; I&#8217;m talking about scale options where you don&#8217;t have to worry about avoid notes.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be showing you these scale options in the next segment.<\/p>\n<h2>Scale Options (For The 2-5-1 Progression) Without Avoid Notes<\/h2>\n<p>Improvising over the 2-5-1 chord progression and not having to worry about avoid notes is priceless.<\/p>\n<p>Using the following scale options:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The melodic minor scale<\/p>\n<p>The Lydian dominant scale<\/p>\n<p>The Lydian scale<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;you can improvise over the 2-5-1 chord progression without avoid notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attention:<\/strong> Please note that all the examples will be given in the key of C major.<\/p>\n<h3>Scale Option #1 &#8212; <em>&#8220;The Melodic Minor Scale&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The D melodic minor scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,D,E,F,G,A,B,Cs,D&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is one scale option for the 2-chord (D minor ninth):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,,F,A,C,E,&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;that has no avoid note.<\/p>\n<p>Also note that raising the seventh tone of the D Dorian scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which is C:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,,C&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;by a half-step (to C#):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,,,Cs&amp;color=FF6633&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;produces the D melodic minor scale:<\/p>\n<h3>Scale Option #2 &#8212;
