But before we go any further, let&#8217;s refresh our minds on suspended chords.<\/p>\n<h2>A Short Note On Suspended Chords<\/h2>\n<p>Every triad has three chord tones: the root, third, and fifth tones.<\/p>\n<p>When the third tone is replaced with the second or fourth tone of the scale, this produces a suspended chord: which can either be a suspended second chord or a suspended fourth chord respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Let me show you how this works.<\/p>\n<h3>The Sus2 Chord<\/h3>\n<p>Using the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which is derived from the C major scale:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;by playing the first, third, and fifth tones (C, E, and G):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;you can form the suspended second (sus2) chord by replacing the third tone (which is E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;with the second tone of the C major scale (which is D):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nSo, C, D, and G (when played together):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,G,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;produces the C sus2 chord.<\/p>\n<h3>The Sus4 Chord<\/h3>\n<p>Replacing the third tone of the C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which is E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;with the fourth tone of the C major scale (which is F):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,F,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;produces &#8220;C-F-G&#8221;:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,F,G,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;which is the suspended fourth (sus4) chord.<\/p>\n<h2>Here&#8217;s How To Apply Suspended Chords<\/h2>\n<p>Now, we have three different triads (in the key of C major):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The C major triad:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe C sus4 chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,F,G,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe Csus2 chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,D,G,,&amp;color=6699CC&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;and I&#8217;m doubly sure you already know how the 1-chord (the C major triad) is applied.
