If you’re interested in\u00a0 expanding the So What<\/em> chord voicing, you’re on the right page.<\/p>\n

As we expand the harmony of the So What<\/em> chord, you’ll have a few more quartal voicings added to your chordal arsenal and most importantly, you’ll be able to harmonize other melody notes that the main So What <\/em>chord can’t harmonize.<\/p>\n

Expanding The Harmony Of The So What <\/em>Chord Voicing<\/h2>\n

We can derive a few more nice-sounding fourth voicings if we expand the harmony of the So What <\/em>chord voicing and that’s what we’ll be doing in this segment.<\/p>\n

The main So What <\/em>voicing is basically a minor eleventh chord and when played on D:
\n
\n…that’s the So What <\/em>voicing of the D minor eleventh chord:
\n
\nNow, let’s go ahead and explore four other options.<\/p>\n

Voicing #1<\/h3>\n

The very first voicing on my list starts on the third tone of the D minor eleventh chord:
\n
\n…and that’s F:
\n
\nHere you are with the first expansion of the So What <\/em>chord voicing consisting of F, A, D, G, and C:
\n
\nSounds good, right? With the C melody note on top:
\n<\/p>\n

Voicing #2<\/h3>\n

The next voicing we’re learning in this lesson has a D:
\n
\n…as its highest-sounding or melody note and it starts from G:
\n
\n…which is the eleventh tone (an extension) of the D minor eleventh chord:
\n
\nPlunk down the following notes on the keyboard and tell me how it sounds:<\/p>\n

G:
\n
\nC:
\n
\nF:
\n
\nA:
\n
\nD:
\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Altogether, that’s another voicing (consisting of G, C, F, A, and D):
\n
\n…from the expansion of the So What<\/em> chord voicing.<\/p>\n

Voicing #3<\/h3>\n

The third voicing derived from the expansion of the So What <\/em>chord consist of A, D, G, C, and F:
\n
\nStarting on the third tone of the D minor eleventh chord:
\n
\n…which is A:
\n
\n…this voicing has F:
\n
\n…as its melody note.<\/p>\n

So, anytime you want to play a So What <\/em>sounding kind of chord and the melody note is F, you might just have to try this particular voicing right here, the “A-D-G-C-F” voicing:
\n<\/p>\n

Voicing #4<\/h3>\n

The last (but not the least) voicing for today is the “C-F-A-D-G” voicing:
\n
\nI love this voicing because the first two tones in the voicing (which are C and F):
\n
\n…are the third and seventh tones (aka – “skeleton”) of the D minor eleventh chord:
\n
\n“That’s Not All…”<\/em><\/p>\n

The melody note of this particular voicing is G:
\n
\n…and that makes it suitable for situations where G is the melody note.<\/p>\n

Final Words<\/h2>\n

The primary reason why we’re expanding the harmony of the So What<\/em> chord voicing is because of melody notes. The main So What <\/em>chord voicing:
\n
\n…has A:
\n
\n…as the highest-sounding note and there are occasions where the melody note may be C:
\n
\n…and you’ll have to switch to voicing #1:
\n
\n…or G:
\n
\n…where you’ll need voicing #4 and that’s why you need to expand the harmony of the So What <\/em>chord voicing.
