{"id":21576,"date":"2020-12-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/?p=21576"},"modified":"2024-07-21T01:23:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-21T09:23:26","slug":"nine-ten-a-big-fat-hen-a-lesson-on-the-left-hand-for-intermediate-keyboard-players","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hearplaymain.wpenginepowered.com\/nine-ten-a-big-fat-hen-a-lesson-on-the-left-hand-for-intermediate-keyboard-players\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Nine, Ten, A Big Fat Hen&#8221;: A Lesson On The Left Hand For Intermediate Keyboard Players"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Intermediate keyboard players use a lot of ninth and tenth intervals to enhance their their left hand.<\/p>\n<p>Before we talk about these intervals, can you remember the nursery rhyme that goes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One, two, Buckle my shoe;<\/p>\n<p>Three, four, Knock at the door;<\/p>\n<p>Five, six, Pick up sticks;<\/p>\n<p>Seven, eight, Lay them straight:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nine, ten, A big fat hen.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the 90s, this was a common rhyme we sang and depending on what part of the world you grew up in, this nursery rhyme should sound familiar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Submission:<\/strong> If the nursery rhyme is doesn&#8217;t sound familiar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fgI6OwCHIX0\">you can just check it out for a moment<\/a> before we proceed.<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;Here&#8217;s What Inspired This Lesson&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I came up with something that has to do with the enhancement of the left hand using ninths and tenths.<\/p>\n<p>So, I was asking myself how I&#8217;ll pass it across in such a way that anybody (even a 9 year old) can relate to it and it didn&#8217;t take long before the nursery rhyme came to my mind.<\/p>\n<p>With this rhyme, I&#8217;m not only showing you how to enhance your left hand but also making it easy for you to recall what to do to enhance your left hand at all times.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;What Are Ninths And Tenths?&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Ninth and tenths are basically intervals.<\/p>\n<p>Now, intervals are the building blocks of chords and harmony. All the chords you can think of and know, can be broken down into intervals.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the C major chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,G,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;can be broken down into the following intervals:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C-E (a major third interval):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nC-G (a perfect fifth interval):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,G,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although intervals are not chords, but they are the musical ancestors of chords because man started using intervals before chords.<\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;Now, Back To Ninths And Tenths&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The numbers in the number system are usually ranging from one to seventh. However, when we extend the number system to cover two octaves:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;we have the following numbers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C\u00a0 D\u00a0 E\u00a0 F\u00a0 G\u00a0 A\u00a0 B\u00a0 C\u00a0 <strong>D<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>E<\/strong>\u00a0 F\u00a0 G\u00a0 A\u00a0 B\u00a0 C<\/p>\n<p>1 \u00a0 2\u00a0 3 \u00a0 4\u00a0 5\u00a0\u00a0 6\u00a0\u00a0 7\u00a0 8\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>9<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>10<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;and it can go all the way up to the 15th (the double-octave) &#8212; which is clearly not our concern in this lesson.<\/p>\n<p>But the point is this: there&#8217;s a ninth and a tenth and they are jumbo versions of the second and the third.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a contrast between the the second interval and the ninth interval:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Second (C to D):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,D,,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nNinth (C to D):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you also compare the third interval with the tenth interval:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Third (C to E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,C,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nTenth (C to E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;you&#8217;ll see that the tenth interval is a jumbo-sized third interval.<\/p>\n<p>If I take a second interval (C to D):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,D,,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and take the D up to the next octave (upper D):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;that&#8217;s the ninth interval (C-D):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nIf I take a third interval (C to E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,E,,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and take the E up to the next octave (upper E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;that&#8217;s the tenth interval (C-E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><em>&#8220;In A Nutshell&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>If you know your second and third intervals, you also know your ninth and third intervals.<\/p>\n<p>Using the D major scale (as a reference):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,E,Fs,G,A,B,Cs,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe second interval (D to E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,E,,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;can be extended to form a ninth interval (D to E):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nThe third interval (D to F#):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,Fs,,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;can be extended to form a tenth interval (D to F#):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,,Fs,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nNow we&#8217;ve reviewed ninths and tenths, so what about them? Well, I&#8217;ll tell you in the next segment.<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8220;If You Want A Big Fat Left Hand, Use Ninths And Tenths&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>It has almost become a tradition for the left hand to graduate from notes to octaves.<\/p>\n<p>For example, it&#8217;s common to graduate from playing C on the bass:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;to playing the C octave:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,C,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nOctaves sound reinforced and good but they don&#8217;t really enhance the left hand like ninth and tenth intervals. If you have the C major chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,G,C,E,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and you&#8217;re playing the C octave on the bass:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,C,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;you are basically duplicating the root note and that doesn&#8217;t enhance the left hand &#8212; it only reinforces the root note you&#8217;re playing.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of this lesson is to take you beyond octaves into the realm of ninth intervals and tenth intervals.<\/p>\n<h3>Enhancing The Left Hand With The Ninth Interval<\/h3>\n<p>A lot of chords sound a lot better on a ninth interval foundation.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Minor Chords&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For example, this C minor ninth chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,D,Eb,G,Bb,D,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is basically an Eb major seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,G,Bb,D,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;over a C ninth (on the left hand):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and it sounds good.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Major Chords&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If we add the E minor chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,G,B,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;to the C ninth interval (on the left hand):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;that produces an overall C major ninth chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,D,E,G,B,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;The Filled-In Ninth Interval&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We can even make the ninth interval sound better by filling it in with the fifth tone of the chord. For example, instead of playing the C ninth interval:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;we fill it in with the fifth tone of the C major scale (which is G):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=G,,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;to make it sound full (C-G-D):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,G,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nJust adding the first inversion of the C major chord (E-G-C):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,G,C,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;to the filled-in ninth interval produces a full-sounding Cadd9 chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,G,D,E,G,C,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nHeck, if we take the C minor ninth chord we learned earlier:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,D,Eb,G,Bb,D,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and fill-in the left hand with a fifth:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,G,D,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;we have a more enhanced chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,G,D,Eb,G,Bb,D,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Enhancing The Left Hand With The Tenth Interval<\/h3>\n<p>Tenth intervals are very unique because they can be used to imply chords and harmonies.<\/p>\n<p>There are two tenth interval types:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The major tenth<\/p>\n<p>The minor tenth<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The tenth interval we&#8217;ve been playing all along is the major tenth. C to E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;is a classic example of a major tenth interval.<\/p>\n<p>When you lower that E:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;by a half-step (to Eb):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=,,Eb,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;you have C to Eb:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,Eb,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;and that&#8217;s a minor tenth interval.<\/p>\n<p>So, a minor tenth interval is basically smaller than the major tenth interval by a half-step. If you take a given major tenth interval and you lower the higher note by a half-step, you get the minor tenth interval.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Here&#8217;s How To Imply Harmonies With Tenth Intervals&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The C major tenth interval:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,E,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;implies the following harmonies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C major chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,E,G,C,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nC dominant seventh chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,E,G,Bb,C,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nC augmented chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,E,Gs,C,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The C minor tenth interval:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,Eb,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n&#8230;implies the following harmonies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>C minor chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,Eb,G,C,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,Eb,Gb,Bb,,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nC diminished chord:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,,Eb,Gb,C,&amp;color=33FFFF&amp;size=2\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tenth intervals are quite a stretch and are not so easy to play.But when learned and mastered, they enhance the left hand a great deal and add a lot of depth to your playing.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Words<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure you can see what we&#8217;ve made out of a simple nursery rhyme.<\/p>\n<p>Ninths and tenths are quite a stretch but if you want that big fat left hand, you really have to stretch for it and trust me, it&#8217;s going
