A perfect fourth to be exact.<\/p>\n<p>What is a perfect fourth interval?<\/p>\n<p>The easiest way is to think of it is the 4th tone of any <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major scale<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script>. Once you&#8217;ve got them memorized, you&#8217;ll just know what a &#8220;perfect fourth up from G&#8221; is or a &#8220;perfect fourth up from Bb.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For example, the C major scale is:<\/p>\n<p>C D E F G A B C<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>F is the fourth tone of the scale and therefore a &#8220;perfect fourth up from C.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Once you go to the F major scale, and do the same thing, you&#8217;ll arrive at Bb being a &#8220;perfect fourth up from F.&#8221; Repeat this process and eventually you get this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>C &#8211; F &#8211; Bb &#8211; Eb &#8211; Ab &#8211; Db &#8211; Gb &#8211; B &#8211; E &#8211; A &#8211; D &#8211; G<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is music&#8217;s favorite motion!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/circleoffifthsbig.jpg\" alt=\"circleoffifths\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are the notes organized in what we call the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Circle Of Fourths<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script>&#8221; (when you go counter-clockwise, the opposite direction of a typical clock&#8217;s movement). If you go clockwise, you&#8217;re moving up in fifths and that&#8217;s why this is also known as the &#8220;Circle Of Fifths.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I prefer calling it the &#8220;Circle Of Fourths&#8221; because that&#8217;s the direction music is usually moving in.<\/p>\n<p>If you circle any three notes going counter-clockwise, you&#8217;ve got yourself a <a title=\"Who else wants to learn 2-5-1 chord progressions in every key?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/who-else-wants-to-learn-2-5-1-chord-progressions-in-every-key\">&#8220;2-5-1&#8221; progression<\/a>, one of the most popular patterns in music. Circle any four notes, and you&#8217;ve got yourself a <a title=\"How To Play 6-2-5-1 Chord Progressions In Minutes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/how-to-play-6-2-5-1-chord-progressions-in-minutes\">&#8220;6-2-5-1&#8221; progression<\/a>, another popular movement.<\/p>\n<p>But just think about it. In songs that you already know how to play (and if you don&#8217;t play yet, you will be soon), what chord is most likely to follow, say, an Ab major chord? If you&#8217;ve got any experience playing in keys that involve Ab, the next chord up is usually some type of <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Db chord<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script>. And as you can see, they are neighbors on the circle!<\/p>\n<p>Take inventory of the songs you know and see how often the chords move according to this circle.
