And the truth is: You can get rid of all the other tones in your chord, keeping only these two notes and your chord will still sound great.<\/p>\n<p>What are those tones?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer:<\/strong> The 3rd and 7th degrees of your chord.<\/p>\n<p>Let me explain.<\/p>\n<p>Major 7th chords are formed by taking the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th tones of your <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major scale<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script> and playing them together:<\/p>\n<p>For example, in C major, the scale is:<\/p>\n<p>C D E F G A B C<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All you do is number that scale from 1 to 7:<\/p>\n<p>C is 1<\/p>\n<p>D is 2<\/p>\n<p>E is 3<\/p>\n<p>F is 4<\/p>\n<p>G is 5<\/p>\n<p>A is 6<\/p>\n<p>B is 7<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This now gives you everything you need to know to form all types of chords.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C major 7 = 1 + 3 + 5 + 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That would be: C + E + G + B<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,E,G,B&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>C minor 7 is 1 + b3 + 5 + b7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you see a &#8220;b&#8221; in front of a <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scale degree<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script>, it simply means to lower that note by a half step. So if &#8220;E&#8221; is the third tone of the scale, Eb is the b3 (aka &#8211; &#8220;flatted third&#8221;) tone of the scale.<\/p>\n<p>That makes C minor: C + Eb + G + Bb<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,Eb,G,Bb&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>C dominant 7 is 1 + 3 + 5 + b7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s: C + E + G + Bb<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,E,G,Bb&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>C diminished 7 is 1 + b3 + b5 + bb7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s: C + Eb + Gb + Bbb (aka &#8211; &#8220;A&#8221;)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=C,Eb,Gb,A&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note: Diminished chords lower the already-lowered &#8220;flatted 7th,&#8221; which gives us a double flat.
