{"id":8709,"date":"2012-09-17T06:33:34","date_gmt":"2012-09-17T14:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/?p=8709"},"modified":"2024-10-22T22:38:38","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T06:38:38","slug":"using-approach-chords-to-spice-up-your-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hearplaymain.wpenginepowered.com\/using-approach-chords-to-spice-up-your-sound\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Approach Chords To Spice Up Your Sound!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In music, an <em>approach chord<\/em> is a chord one half-step higher or lower than the goal (aka &#8211; <em>place you&#8217;re going to<\/em>), and especially helpful in turnarounds and <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chord progressions<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script> that move in fourths.<\/p>\n<p>So if you were in C major and about to play a chord on the 2nd degree (D minor 7), you could immediately apply this technique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D minor 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,F,A,C&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since this D major 7 is your goal, we have a couple options when it comes to approach chords.<\/p>\n<p>We can take the Db (the tone a half-step LOWER) and play a chord on it. Or we could take the Eb (the tone a half-step HIGHER) and do something with it.<\/p>\n<p>For this example, I&#8217;ve chosen the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eb<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script>. We&#8217;re going to play an Eb13. Those, along with other dominant voicings (Eb7, Eb9) work great.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eb 13<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Eb,Db,F,G,C&amp;color=&amp;size=1\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If we were going to use our other &#8220;approach chord&#8221; option, we could take the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Db<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script> and play a diminished 7 on it.<\/p>\n<p>Db diminished 7<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Db,,E,G,Bb&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Try experimenting.
