{"id":8747,"date":"2012-09-26T07:38:27","date_gmt":"2012-09-26T15:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/?p=8747"},"modified":"2024-10-22T22:20:46","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T06:20:46","slug":"a-quick-follow-up-to-approach-chords","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hearplaymain.wpenginepowered.com\/a-quick-follow-up-to-approach-chords\/","title":{"rendered":"A Quick Follow-Up To &#8220;Approach Chords&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After writing about <a title=\"Using Approach Chords To Spice Up Your Sound!\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hearandplay.com\/main\/using-approach-chords-to-spice-up-your-sound\">Approach Chords<\/a> the other day, I received a request for more of these types of chords.<\/p>\n<p>Recall the definition of approach chords &#8211; In music, an approach chord is a chord one half-step higher or lower than the goal (aka \u2013 <em>place you\u2019re going to<\/em>), and especially helpful in turnarounds and <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chord progressions<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script> that move in fourths.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s another idea for you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>On the tone a half step &#8220;LOWER&#8221; than the chord you want to go to (aka &#8211; &#8220;the target&#8221;), play a minor7 #5.<\/p>\n<p>So if my target chord is <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebminor7<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script>, which is <em>Eb on left \/\/\/ Gb + Bb + Db<\/em> on right, I could play D minor 7 #5 right before it: <em>D on left \/\/\/ C + F + A#<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dmin7 #5<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=D,C,F,As&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Eb minor 7<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Eb,Gb,Bb,Db&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or you could invert the Dmin7 #5 to put F on top:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=As,C,F&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;which leads nicely to an Eb minor 9 (which allows you to keep the F from the previous chord on top):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Eb,Gb,Bb,Db,F&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And for more spice, you could turn the Dmin7 #5 into a D7 #9#5 with the addition of one note (F#) on the bottom:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearandplay.cc\/dynamic_image\/pianokeys.php?notes=Fs,As,C,F&amp;color=&amp;size=2\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So there you have it &#8212; a few more ideas to get your <a href=\"https:\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox\/141e8f273f72a2%3A14dcc288eb46dc\/5650082896543744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creativity<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/my.leadpages.net\/leadbox-714.js\"><\/script> juices flowing.
